Schwab's latest survey: 60% of U.S. cryptocurrency investors plan to increase their holdings beyond traditional assets

Charles Schwab's latest research points out that most U.S. cryptocurrency investors plan to increase their holdings next year, a trend that exceeds traditional assets such as stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), bonds and mutual funds in terms of growth willingness.

Young investors drive momentum in the crypto market

According to the "2026 Modern Wealth Survey" released by Charles Schwab, 60% of cryptocurrency investors currently expect to increase their investment in digital assets in the next 12 months. This exceeds the growth willingness of investors holding ETFs (56%), equity investors (52%), bond holders (42%) and mutual fund investors (41%).

Joe Vietri, head of digital assets at Charles Schwab, emphasized that the younger generation is leading the trend:

"Existing cryptocurrency investors are indeed investing more, especially young investors, who are driving most of the interest and momentum in cryptocurrencies. But in my opinion, the bigger story is that cryptocurrencies are increasingly being seen as a supplement to traditional investments."

Survey shows that millennials are the most likely group to own cryptocurrencies, with a holding rate more than four times that of Boomers.

Background knowledge: Charles Schwab is one of the leading financial services companies in the United States and is known for its brokerage, banking services and wealth management solutions. It is the largest registered investment adviser custodian in the country.

Cryptocurrency ownership continues to grow

The report reveals that one in five Americans currently owns a cryptocurrency, and another one in five are interested in making a first cryptocurrency purchase. Nearly half of all investors said they hold crypto assets.

In recent years, Charles Schwab has continued to enhance his digital asset portfolio. In early 2026, the company launched the "Schwab Crypto" platform in phases to provide retail customers with direct Bitcoin transaction services, and provide educational resources and professional support.

In addition to spot trading, Schwab also offers exchange-traded funds (ETFs) linked to cryptocurrencies, bitcoin futures, and Schwab Cryptocurrency-themed Index ETFs. CEO Rick Wurster said Schwab's clients hold more than 20% of cryptocurrency-related exchange-traded products across the industry.
