U.S. government's 17,733 bitcoins in Coinbase Prime wallet: Transfer does not mean sale

U.S. government-linked wallets transferred 17,733 bitcoins to Coinbase Prime: On-chain data analysis and market reaction

Relevant wallets belonging to the U.S. government transferred 17,733 bitcoins worth approximately US$1.48 billion to Coinbase Prime accounts within three days. According to public records, none of these coins were sold. It was the huge gap between these two sentences that caused the market to fluctuate violently on Thursday and Friday: Bitcoin rebounded after falling to an October low, during which time leveraged positions worth more than $1 billion were forcibly liquidated.

17,733 bitcoins on Coinbase Prime: What does the on-chain data reveal

According to TokenPost's analysis, as of October 9, 17,733 bitcoins worth approximately US$1.48 billion arrived at Coinbase Prime within three days. Another 750 WBTC (Wrapped Bitcoin) worth approximately US$62 million also flowed to the same address. Caution should be exercised at this stage: the number of WBTC shown by different analytical sources fluctuates between 50 and 750, and different determinations of wallet ownership can lead to differences in the total. Another statistic based on addresses related to Bitfinex seizure cases puts the number at 12,267 BTC, or approximately US$1.01 billion.

TokenPost made clear in its report: These financial flows do not prove that the government sold Bitcoin or caused the price to fall. This caution has often been lost in recent media reports and has been replaced by a narrative of "state suppression of the market", which often spreads faster than the truth.

Chain clearing of leveraged positions: first price declines, followed by forced selling

The factors that really drive price fluctuations are more closely documented than the reasons attributed to them. CoinGlass data reported by The Cryptomist showed that positions worth $1.09 billion were forcibly closed in the 24 hours ended Friday morning. Among them, long positions accounted for US$1.05 billion, accounting for slightly more than 96%. Other statistics covering overlapping time periods give figures between $1.06 billion and $1.14 billion; although the size depends on the statistical window and the exchanges covered, the direction is consistent across all data sets.

The 96% long position does not describe attacks from the outside, but describes an overly unilateral position structure. When almost everyone is betting on rising prices and the vast majority is using borrowed money, a moderate correction is enough to trigger a chain reaction.

Formation mechanism of clearing chain: margin, capital rate and forced selling

Leveraged positions are essentially loans backed by collateral. Traders deposit initial margin and trade multiple assets. If the price falls, the value of the collateral shrinks; once it falls below the threshold, the exchange will automatically close the position and sell the collateral on the market. This forced sell drives down prices further, triggering a threshold for the next position, creating a waterfall liquidation effect in which millions of dollars disappear in minutes.

Funding Rate is the fee paid by one party to another party to hold a perpetual contract position. When the funding rate is significantly positive for a long time, buyers need to pay sellers, which reveals that long positions are too heavy. Liquidation Price is the price at which collateral is no longer sufficient. Both can be determined and calculated before entering the transaction, but are often estimated in daily transactions rather than recalculated in real time.

In practice, this means that the risk taken by perpetual contract traders depends not only on the price itself, but also on the distribution of other people's positions. Our comparison of Perp DEX platforms shows that there are significant differences between platforms in fees, leverage levels, and clearing rules, and actual risk exposures are often greater than the leverage multiple shown in the advertisement.

October lows between US$80,350 and US$80,475

This week's lows vary from exchange to exchange, and the spread is part of the market picture. The Cryptomist cited a low on Bitstamp of $80,350, the lowest level since September 18. TokenPost gave an October low of $80,420. Our own analysis of daily ranges on the Kraken Exchange shows intraday lows for the BTC/USD pair at US$80,474.70 and highs at US$83,462.90. Cryptoticker.io collected this data on October 9, 2026, based on the performance of a verified trading pair on an exchange.

The spread of about $125 between the data is irrelevant to trading decisions, but is crucial to understanding the market: there is no single bitcoin price, only as many as the number of exchanges. If the stop loss is set right near the reported low, it may have been triggered on your exchange but not on other exchanges.

As of Friday afternoon, Bitcoin trading prices were approximately US$82,650, about 1.2% higher than 24 hours ago (October 9, 2026, Kraken data). This means prices still have about $2,100 to cushion from lows and about $800 below intraday highs.

How to check the flow of funds in government wallets by yourself

You don't have to rely on others 'interpretations. The relevant address is public, and the flow of funds is recorded on the blockchain. A blockchain browser or tag service can display address inflows and outflows with timestamps and amounts. Before reading the headlines, it is recommended to pay attention to the following four points:

  • Direction and destination: Will the balance be transferred to the escrow address or the transaction address of the exchange? The two are similar in appearance, but have completely different meanings.
  • Label and its timeliness: When will this address be assigned this attribution? What sources are cited by the service? An unfounded label is just an assertion.
  • Hedging entry: Does the amount appear in the exchange's reserves or is it spread to new addresses? The latter usually does not support the sale.
  • Comparison with transaction volume: $1 billion may sound huge, but it accounts for a small proportion of Bitcoin's average daily transaction volume. Without this frame of reference, any large number looks like a major event.

This second path through on-chain data explains why the story of "national selling positions" is difficult to maintain. When prices rebounded on Friday, positions remained stuck with Coinbase Prime. If the seller did bring 17,733 bitcoins to the market, the traces left would be completely different.

ETF reported a net outflow of US$244.13 million for the second consecutive day

There is another more rational source of market pressure this week. According to SoValue, the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF recorded a net redemption of $244.13 million on October 8;Farside Investors showed it at $244.1 million. This was the second consecutive day of net outflow. The day before (October 7), Farside reported an outflow of US$484.9 million, and SoSoValue reported US$487.07 million, totaling approximately US$729 million for the two days.

Most of the outflow came from a single fund: Fidelity's FBTC lost $197.1 million on October 8. BlackRock's IBIT flowed out of $5.5 million that day after outflow of $207.7 million in the previous trading day. Franklin's EZBC was the only fund to achieve positive returns, with a net inflow of $4.71 million. The total assets of this product group are US$104.91 billion.

ETFs operate differently than futures clearing. They are slower, involve real positions rather than borrowing positions, and last longer because asset allocation decisions are behind them rather than margin thresholds.

Position periods, leverage and custody: What they mean for German investors

From a tax perspective, this week's price decline is mainly a calendar issue. In Germany, profits from cryptocurrency assets are tax-exempt after one year of holding; within one year they are taxed as income from private disposal. The logic works both ways: losses realized within a one-year window can offset the gains of other private disposals. Once the period expires, profits are exempt from tax, and losses are tax invalid. Therefore, if you consider selling during a downturn, the purchase date is the primary consideration.

Regulatory framework determines leverage risk

Coinbase Prime

In the view of this newsroom, the narrative of "national selling pressure" cannot support the weight given to it this week. There are three well-documented points against this claim: first, there is no sale in the public record; the source providing the transfer information clearly states this. Second,$1.05 billion of the $1.09 billion liquidations were long positions, indicating that positions were too unilateral rather than increased external supply. Third, although the positions remained unchanged in the custodian, the price recovered to approximately $82,650 on Friday.

The reasons for supporting the opposite view are things we don't know. Except for relevant agencies, no one knows the purpose of these transfers, and the possibility of disposal in the coming weeks still exists. Unrecorded sales are not excluded sales. To derive price forecasts from this, we simply replace one unproven narrative with another. The only solid observation is that the market took a hit this week by its own leverage structure.

What has changed since the October 8 plunge

Timing related to the previous day is important because the situation has shifted. We described the fall below $81,000 on October 8 and why. Three things have changed since then: prices have recovered the $81,000 mark and are currently trading above $82,650; liquidations have exceeded the $1 billion mark in 24 hours, reaching $1.09 billion, exceeding the previous day's size; and explanatory logic has switched: macro pressure has become "the state as the seller" overnight, although no evidence has been provided.

There are two specific dates worthy of attention in the next few days. The U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) on October 14 will affect interest rate expectations, which in turn affects risk appetite across the market. Daily ETF data will show whether the outflow stops or continues after two days; the third day in the series will be a more indicative signal than any wallet flow.

Summary: Government Bitcoin in Coinbase Prime: 17,733 BTC, Undocumented Sale

This week's events can be sorted out through the following steps:

  1. Separate transfer operations from interpretation. 17,733 bitcoins were stored in the custodian without any record of sales. If you're reviewing your buying channels, compare fees, custody models, and regulations across platforms in our overview of the best cryptocurrency exchanges, rather than responding to headlines.
  2. Recalculate your clearing price before the next pullback. Given that the proportion of long positions in forced liquidations is as high as 96%, the initial margin determines the outcome. If you use leveraged trading, a hardware wallet will not tell you the terms of the platform, but it will answer the question of whether your remaining positions are safer than in margin positions.
  3. Clarify your purchase date, not your emotions. Whether selling during a downturn has tax significance depends on the one-year period. Our comparison of cryptocurrency tax tools provides a tool to get a clear overview of acquisition dates.
