Ledger discovers malicious hardware in tampered wallets sold by CryptoBilis

Ledger, a leading provider of cryptocurrency hardware wallets, reported that traces of unauthorized hardware modifications were found in a device related to a recent security incident. The company discovered an illegal component inside wallets purchased by its users through authorized Southeast Asian distributor CryptoBilis.

Hardware tampering raises security concerns

For the first time in this case, this investigation has revealed physical evidence that at least one Ledger device was tampered with before reaching customers. The modified device contained an external hardware implant, raising concerns about the potential exposure of user funds and the scope of the spread of infected wallets.

Currently, the specific functions and impact of the implant are unclear, and Ledger has not yet determined the number of wallets that may be affected. However, the company has confirmed that it is working with law enforcement agencies and contacting users who may have been affected by the incident.

Ledger said in its latest statement that it discovered illegal hardware inside user devices related to the CryptoBilis security incident and is actively cooperating with law enforcement and affected users.

According to Ledger, an attacker may not need to have direct access to the secure element responsible for generating and protecting a user's private key. Instead, unauthorized hardware components appear to be designed to intercept and monitor communication lines inside the device, potentially revealing sensitive information displayed on the wallet screen.

Mark Karpelès
