Buying NFTs in 2026: A Guide to Reshaping the Market Landscape and Survival
In 2026, the channels for purchasing non-homogeneous tokens (NFTs) will be significantly fewer than a year ago. The NFT Trading Market is the main venue for displaying, auctioning and trading digital collectibles. During the year, three major providers either closed completely or partially scaled back their operations: Binance's NFT trading service, art platform Nifty Gateway, and Magic Eden's non-Solana marketplaces. The main platforms still in operation include OpenSea, Blur, Tensor, Rarible and SuperRare.
Since the closure of these platforms, the primary determinant of which market to choose for users boils down to one question: On which blockchain are your favorite NFT located?
Differences between the NFT trading market and a cryptocurrency exchange
The NFT trading market is a trading platform for non-homogeneous tokens. The so-called "non-homogenization" means that these tokens cannot be exchanged with each other like coins, because each token represents its unique and unique asset. In contrast, cryptocurrency exchanges match buy and sell orders for swappable cryptocurrencies; the NFT market works more like an auction house with a window display.
The actual difference between the two lies in Custody 。On an exchange, your assets are usually held in accounts held by the provider. In the NFT market, you need to connect to your own crypto wallet, and NFT is always kept in your wallet. The market only displays what's in your wallet and settles transactions through smart contracts (programs running on the blockchain itself that automatically perform the exchange of tokens and payments).
That's why the closure of the platform is not as disastrous as it sounds for collectors: if the market disappears, only the "window" will disappear, not the ownership itself.
Review of major market trends
1. Binance: NFT trading terminated on July 3, 2026
Binance has closed the NFT segment on its centralized trading platform on July 3, 2026. The announcement was released on June 3, 2026, giving users one month. All transferable NFTs must be transferred to internal wallets or other compatible external wallets before the deadline (23:59 UTC).
What is worth noting is the handling of non-transferable parts. For example, certificates from internal learning platforms are technically not removable; after the deadline they become inaccessible and are replaced by certificates provided in PDF format. In fact, Binance's independent NFT market was closed as early as 2023, and this step in 2026 only involves the remaining part.
For German users, this is mainly a question about deadlines. Those users who missed the notification and did not transfer the balance did not suffer losses in terms of transferable assets, but they would need to be processed through customer service afterwards.
2. Nifty Gateway:自2026年4月23日起关闭
Nifty Gateway
US$576 million versus US$121,000 reveals the nature of withdrawal.
Behind these closures lies a business calculation that is rarely so public and clear. Citing analysis from data service Dune, Decrypt reported that in the month before the announcement, Magic Eden traded approximately $576 million in digital collectibles, the vast majority of which occurred on the Solana chain. Of that, only about $121,000 came from works based on Bitcoin.
This ratio explains the mechanism better than any statement. For each additional blockchain supported, the market has to bear its own indexing, smart contract, customer service and security audit costs, which will be incurred regardless of the transaction volume on the chain. Once a branch's trading volume falls below the threshold required to maintain its operations, it is closed, and this impacts the smaller chain first.
Revelation: The narrower the market for collectibles, the greater the risk that its trading platform will eventually disappear. Ownership is retained, but liquidity may be lost.
Currently active major trading platforms
1. OpenSea, Blur, and Tensor
OpenSea remain the platform with the broadest reach, with the launch of the second version of its interface, supporting multiple networks including Ethereum, Polygon, and Solana. It is often the obvious starting point for beginners because it requires the least prior knowledge of its supply, collections, and payment paths.
BlurFor high-frequency traders on Ethereum. Its interface displays bids and fixed prices for multiple collections side by side, and packages orders, which is a bit messy for collectors holding a single piece of work. Tensor plays the same role on Solana. Both platforms are built for speed and transaction volume, not for browsing.
All three platforms require your own wallet and matching cryptocurrency. The purchase cannot be completed without ETH on Ethereum or SOL on Solana, and these assets need to be acquired first on a regulated cryptocurrency exchange.
2. Rarible: Brand sold to IMPOSSIBLE
Rarible remains a multi-chain market, showcasing collections from Ethereum, Solana and other chains. It is said that the company IMPOSSIBLE has taken over a substantial part of the Rarible brand and platform technology, including the RaribleX infrastructure business, and plans to continue to develop along the established path.
The governance token RARI was excluded from the sale and remained held by affiliated foundations. For market users, the owner change has little impact on daily operations at the beginning; however, users trading in the market still need to pay attention to the announcement of the new owner, because the recent closure of the market is often given hasty notice.
3. SuperRare: Curatorial art in niche markets
SuperRare takes the opposite approach to the mass market: artists are screened, the number of works is sparse, and each piece of art is a single-piece version. This part of the market relies more on collectors looking for specific works than on trading volumes.
This is a separate category when selecting a platform. The experiences digital art collectors find on curatorial platforms are very different from open platforms where anyone can list collectibles. Each of the two approaches has its own rationality and serves different buyers.
Technical Security and Compliance Guide
Wallet Selection and Security Management
Wallet determines which markets you can access. For Ethereum and EVM chains, you need wallets that support these networks; for Solana, you need to handle Solana format wallets. Multi-chain wallets cover both, while single-chain wallets cannot.
There are two points here that are more important than selecting a provider:
- Security of Recovery Phrase: Never take photos, save them in notes apps or cloud storage.
- Protect against phishing attacks: Before each connection, be sure to check whether the address being called is really the official market address. Fake interfaces are one of the most common attacks in the market. Exploit cases near Magic Eden show that old authorizations are sufficient to transfer other people's assets. Authorizations can be revoked, which is an action that must be performed every time a market is changed.
Fee structure: marketing fees, royalties and network costs
Purchase costs consist of three parts, which are usually not displayed together on the listing page:
- Market handling fees: will be deducted by the platform from sales revenue.
- Royalty: Payments to artists or project parties are collected by smart contracts or markets; execution levels vary on each platform.
- Gas Fee: Fees on Ethereum fluctuate significantly with load, while fees on Solana are generally lower.
Therefore, don't make judgments based on the prices displayed. In fact, the difference between the two platforms often lies not in the market fees, but in the chain in which transactions occur and the network costs they bring.
Storage risks of metadata and images
For most collections, what is stored on the blockchain is not the image itself, but a reference to it. Metadata (names, attributes, and image file paths) is typically stored on the project's server or distributed file system. As long as the blockchain is running, the token itself will remain in your wallet.
This is the real risk of shutting down: If a project shuts down its servers, your NFT may appear as a blank surface, even though the record on the blockchain remains unchanged. Therefore, Nifty Gateway's clear commitment to continue hosting metadata and images is particularly valuable.
Pre-purchase check: If the collection shows where files are stored and stored in a distributed file system, there is less reliance on a single provider.
MiCA Regulations and NFT: Blind Areas Under the Umbrella
Keep records from the beginning. The purchase time, euro-denominated prices, fees and wallet addresses should all be filed because closed markets will not provide subsequent statements.
Editor's point of view: Chain determines the market
Our assessment believes that in 2026, choosing a platform will no longer be a matter of personal taste, but will follow the trend of blockchain. Data from Magic Eden's retreat strongly supports this view: approximately US$576 million per month in trading volume on the strong chain, compared with approximately US$121,000 on the weak chain, coupled with the closures of Binance and Nifty Gateway within six months. On the other hand, two providers, OpenSea and Rarible, continue to serve multiple chains, indicating that the market has not completely disintegrated. Still, buyers should expect that the trading platform for their works may change in two years. Since many collections may no longer find buyers, the possibility of a complete loss of funds exists at any time.
Recommendation for action: In a market without MiCA protection, only your wallet can be trusted
Three closures in a year make the market easier to observe, but also show the speed at which window closures are closed. Your ownership depends on the wallet and chain, not the provider. Please operate in the following order:
- First determine the chain: Find out which blockchain the collection of interest is located and select the platform accordingly.
- Get cryptocurrency in advance: Buy ETH or SOL on a licensed platform and transfer it to your wallet.
- Arrange custody and authorization: Put valuable works on devices that keep the key offline and revoke old authorizations after each market change.
