Bitcoin rose in response to Trump declaring an "energy ceasefire" in Russia and Ukraine
On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced an "energy ceasefire" agreement against Russia and Ukraine. The news pushed Bitcoin prices higher before oil markets reopened to assess the development. According to CoinDesk's Market Report, neither the cryptocurrency market nor the energy market initially responded after Trump made the statement on his social media platform Truth Social. It was not until Ukraine President Vladimir Zelensky expressed conditional support that Bitcoin began to rise, rising more than 1% to about US$83,900.
The order of events is more critical than headlines. Trump wrote that the ceasefire took effect immediately and the two sides had reached an agreement, warning: "Do not disrupt!" However, Kiev's initial response was caution rather than confirmation.
What did Trump announce? How did Kiev respond?
Trump's post on Real Social announced that the energy ceasefire would take effect immediately, but did not provide specific terms, start time or mechanisms to verify compliance. When asked about it by Axios reporter Barak Lavid, Zelensky said the announcement would also be "breaking news" for him, adding that if Russia Agreed, and Ukraine will also agree to an energy ceasefire. A few minutes later, he made remarks on Platform X (formerly Twitter), and his tone turned more supportive, saying that Ukraine supported the ceasefire and was waiting for details from the United States.
Bitcoin only changed after Zelensky replied
Market reactions closely track this time series. After Trump posted, crude oil and cryptocurrency prices remained near Friday's levels and did not start to fluctuate until Zelensky posted information on platform X. Traders wait for a second-party confirmation signal, which suggests that geopolitical risks have been heavily factored into Bitcoin's pricing. The trend is also reminiscent of Bitcoin's reaction to Trump's previous signal about Iran: the market repriced geopolitical risk within minutes of an announcement.
Still, the magnitude of the response is instructive: compared with this year's sharp swings in Bitcoin due to geopolitical headlines, the increase of about 1% appears moderate. This is in line with the pricing logic of traders treating such signals as "positive but unconfirmed" rather than predetermined results.
Is it a real downgrade or a hot topic before the election?
Bloomberg's Javier Bras points out that this is Trump
