Elon Musk believes AI has the potential to save the U.S. finances, but it still faces significant challenges ahead.
Elon Musk once predicted that artificial intelligence could be a key solution to the U.S. debt crisis. However, this bold prediction is currently facing tough tests, and the current data trends aren’t optimistic.
From “the only solution” to real-world pressures
In an podcast interview in November 2025, Musk said that artificial intelligence and robotics are almost the only ways to solve the U.S. debt crisis. “I think this is the only way to address the U.S. debt crisis, because the current debt level in the U.S. is extremely high,” Musk said at that time. At that time, the total amount of U.S. government debt exceeded $38 trillion, and by August 2026, it had surpassed $40 trillion.
Musk pointed out that interest payments alone already exceed the entire U.S. military budget. Therefore, he believes that artificial intelligence will eventually drive growth in goods and services, thereby leading to deflation. However, he also acknowledged that artificial intelligence hasn’t yet reached a level where it can achieve this goal. His timeline for achieving this is just three years.
Since then, the pressure has continued to increase. By late September, the yield on 10-year U.S. bonds rose to 5.24%, while the yield on 30-year bonds reached 5.56%, the highest level since June 2004.
Economists believe that AI may not be able to solve the crisis alone.
One of them is Anthony Scaramucci, the founder of SkyBridge Capital. In August this year, he agreed with Peter Schiff’s warnings regarding US debt and inflation. However, his proposed solution involved using Bitcoin instead of gold.
Musk’s relationship with Bitcoin is more complex. In 2021, he claimed to be a “supporter of Bitcoin.” But a few months later, Tesla stopped accepting Bitcoin as a payment method on the grounds of environmental concerns. In 2022, Tesla sold most of its holdings in Bitcoin. Nevertheless, Tesla still holds 11,509 units of Bitcoin, while SpaceX disclosed in its IPO documents that it owns 18,712 units of Bitcoin.
