Futures Commission Merchants (FCMs) are companies authorized to solicit and accept futures and options orders, and to hold customer funds for these transactions. Designated Contract Markets (DCMs), on the other hand, are platforms that operate as exchanges, listing contracts for trading. Having both of these qualifications means that Blockchain.com can directly provide related infrastructure to users in the United States, rather than directing them to third-party platforms. These applications follow the company’s previous efforts to launch self-hosted prediction markets and perpetual contract trading in non-U.S. markets.
In the field of prediction markets, Blockchain.com has partnered with Polymarket, which recently launched a Protocol V2 upgrade, introducing a new ERC-1155 market that offers self-hosted prediction market services to global users. The application submitted to the CFTC aims to introduce similar event-based contracts into the U.S. market.
Peter Smith, CEO and co-founder of Blockchain.com, said, “Users should be able to easily manage digital assets, trade derivatives, and place positions on real-world events, without having to switch between different applications.”
Regulatory trends and future prospects
This application is part of Blockchain.com’s global licensing initiative. Previously, the company has obtained EU MiCA authorization, registration with the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and a license as a virtual asset service provider in the Cayman Islands. Additionally, this move coincides with the CFTC’s efforts to establish regulations governing the inclusion of event contracts within its swap framework. This could potentially shape the regulatory landscape of the US derivatives market.
It should be noted that approval is not guaranteed. The application must pass the CFTC’s review process, and no specific timeline for decision-making has been provided by the company.
