Gemini obtains a MPI license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore to accelerate expansion in the Singapore market

Gemini has obtained a Full Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), further consolidating its regulatory compliance status in Asia. As the exchange moves beyond purely cryptocurrencies, stock trading, tokenized stocks and forecasting markets are becoming key growth engines.

The license authorizes Gemini's Singapore entities to provide regulated digital payment token services. The leading cryptocurrency exchange announced a major regulatory achievement: it has officially been granted a full Major Payment Institution license by MAS, marking an important milestone for the company's operations in Asia Pacific.

Gemini Digital Payments Singapore Pte. Ltd. (GDPSPL) had previously obtained approval in principle from MAS in October 2024, and now it has officially received the full license. The exchange confirmed this progress on September 8, 2026.

This development gives Gemini a stronger regulatory foundation in key financial and digital asset markets in Asia.

Business scope covered by MPI license

This approval is of great significance because the MPI license is not a simple registration of a cryptocurrency company. Under Singapore's Payment Services Act, major payment institutions are required to comply with more comprehensive regulatory requirements due to the size of their businesses and potential risks.

MAS pointed out that MPI can provide regulated payment services and are not limited by transaction volume or the amount of electronic money held. At the same time, these institutions must meet safeguards, including requirements to protect client funds.

For Gemini, the most relevant authorization in the MPI license is its Digital Payment Token (DPT) service. The DPT service covers regulated activities involving digital payment tokens, which is Singapore's regulatory classification of crypto assets. Currently, MAS lists 37 major payment institutions that provide DPT services.

These include major cryptocurrency and digital asset companies such as Coinbase Singapore, Circle Internet Singapore, BitGo Singapore and Blockchain.com Singapore. This makes Gemini a member of a group of regulated digital asset companies operating under Singapore's payment services system.

Gemini currently provides spot trading, digital asset custody and over-the-counter (OTC) services to customers in Singapore. The company said retail and institutional customers remain at the core of its Singapore strategy.

Cameron Winklevoss, president and co-founder of Gemini, said in a company press release: "Obtaining MAS MPI license confirms our commitment and investment in Singapore." The move comes as Singapore has become a key center for cryptocurrency companies in the Asia-Pacific region, and Bitgo recently opened an office in Singapore.

From approval-in-principle to full license

Gemini's latest approval follows its nearly two years of regulatory process in Singapore. In October 2024, Gemini announced that MAS had granted it approval in principle for an MPI license under its Payment Services Act of 2019, covering cross-border funds transfers and digital payment token services.

This full license allows Gemini to transcend its initial regulatory status. At the same time, Gemini is rapidly expanding beyond its core cryptocurrency exchange business, working to build what it calls a "full-stack financial market platform." In recent months, the company has launched commission-free U.S. stock trading, round-the-clock (5 days a week) stock trading, and tokenized stocks. In addition, it has expanded its forecast markets business by partnering with Apex.

Gemini has also received approval from U.S. regulators to operate its own predictive market exchange and clearing infrastructure, thereby reducing reliance on external market infrastructure. Therefore, the MPI license is another important supplement to the company's continued growth and expansion.
