Important update: The upgrade of the Pi Network main network is scheduled for September 15.
Although the previous deadline for major protocol updates has passed several days, the project core team finally announced its successful deployment. In addition, they provided more details about the next update, which is planned as the last scheduled upgrade.
New date: September 15
The long process of upgrading the protocol began in February this year, when the core team launched version 19.6. Multiple versions were subsequently released, including the v20.2 version that laid the foundation for smart contract functionality.
Most subsequent updates were successfully deployed as scheduled, but the team admitted there were some delays. One of them is version 25, which was originally scheduled to be implemented on July 22. However, the team pointed out that this version has become significantly more difficult to deploy, causing delays. Still, it was eventually integrated, and Pi Network set its sights on the next version-version 26. Although its deadline was originally scheduled to be August 11, there were no official updates in the following week. However, the vast Pi Network community posted a large number of posts on the X platform indicating that the update had been deployed and the team confirmed it earlier today.
In the latest post on the X platform on the only official account, the core team stated that version 26 had been successfully completed on the main website, and emphasized that the next version (planned to be the last one) must be implemented on September 15. It will introduce more flexible and secure smart contract authentication capabilities and provide a more advanced way for accounts and applications to authorize transactions. Version 27 will continue to advance project work, integrate updated protocol features, and expand the network's smart contract capabilities.
Version 0.6.2
Other recent updates include the release of Pi Node 0.6.2 last week. This release improves SoloHost, node connectivity, and the user experience for Pi Desktop.
Perhaps the most remarkable part of recent experiments was that five volunteer node operators participated in an initial distributed computing test, all of which received the task, performed the required calculations, and returned the results to the Pi coordinator.
In addition, Pi Network will update its pricing model for creating and editing apps on August 24. Under the current model, only 0.25 PI is needed to create an application and an additional 0.25 PI is needed for editing, with the difference (which may be significantly higher in some cases) borne by the project party. The new model will take a different approach, standard prices will be closer to actual costs, and may vary based on the resources required for each operation. Applications that can prove that they have real user value and are used by different users can still enjoy the previously subsidized prices. The eligibility will be reviewed regularly, which means that developers who initially do not qualify may receive lower rates later if their apps start attracting real users.
