Japan's Bitcoin Industry Company launches the Aurora platform to help global animation sales accept Bitcoin payments.
Japan's Bitcoin Industry Company (JBI) has launched a new self-hosted Bitcoin payment platform called Aurora, aiming to help Japanese content creators reach fans around the world, especially those who cannot use traditional payment services.
Aurora makes its debut at Bitcoin Asia Conference
JBI officially announced the launch of the Aurora platform at this week's Bitcoin Asia Conference in Hong Kong. The platform is aimed at international fans of Japanese anime, comics and games, and strives to solve payment problems that have long prevented overseas users from accessing Japanese digital content.
Global demand for Japanese content continues to grow, but many international consumers still encounter obstacles when trying to purchase subscription services, limited edition products or peripheral products due to the restrictions and complexity of cross-border payments.
How Aurora works
Aurora enables customers outside of Japan to make payments using Bitcoin through the Lightning Network. Lightning Network is an off-chain capacity expansion solution that enables fast and low-cost transactions. Japanese merchants can use Aurora's point-of-sale interface or integrate its APIs to process invoices, payment tracking and platform docking.
Small Dictionary: Lightning Network-a payment protocol built on top of Bitcoin. By processing most transactions offline and then settling them to the Bitcoin main chain, achieving near-real-time transactions and reducing fees.
JBI emphasized that Aurora's design ensures that the company itself never holds customer funds. Merchants operate their own self-hosted Bitcoin Lightning nodes to directly receive payments from overseas customers.
JBI said this self-custody approach allows companies to directly control assets and reduce regulatory risks. The company will handle technical operations such as maintaining node online time, managing liquidity, and supporting accounting and auditing-which have historically been major obstacles to companies adopting Bitcoin.
Aurora's self-managed architecture means merchants receive Bitcoin directly, while JBI is responsible for technical and operational matters such as node management, liquidity, and fiat conversion.
Industry Growth and Market Potential
According to JBI data, the scale of Japanese animation content in overseas markets will increase by 26% year-on-year to 2.17 trillion yen in 2024. However, due to restrictions in the payment system, many fans are still unable to obtain content or collectibles.
(Note: The market size in 2023 will be 1.72 trillion yen, reaching 2.17 trillion yen in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 26%.)
JBI pointed out that Aurora was built based on the company's experience with its UseBitcoin.jp platform. The platform has provided Lightning Network-based payment services for digital gift card purchases since 2024. Supported gift cards include popular options such as au PAY, V-Preca and Kyash.
Small Dictionary: Japan Bitcoin Industry Corporation (JBI)-A Japanese company focusing on providing Bitcoin payment solutions to businesses and consumers, aims to promote the adoption of cryptocurrencies by providing a compliant and user-friendly platform.
With Aurora, international fans can purchase Japanese digital products directly with Bitcoin, while merchants retain full control of the funds throughout the process.
Industry Promotion and Future Plans
JBI invites media, merchants and wallet providers to communicate with the team at the 2026 Bitcoin Asia Conference in Hong Kong to discuss platform features and potential cooperation opportunities.
By opening up smoother international payment channels, the company aims to make Japanese content easier for the world's growing fan base.
Anime and comic producers, digital goods sellers and overseas fans will all benefit from the broader reach and simplified payment experience Aurora provides through Bitcoin and Lightning networks.
