Polygon publicly discloses critical security vulnerabilities and fixes them through two private hard forks.
Polygon recently publicly disclosed a series of major security vulnerabilities that may have affected the normal operation of its proof-of-stake (PoS) network. The fixes have been completed through two hard forks called Austin and Kyoto, which were quietly implemented before public disclosure.
Private deployment of security patches
Polygon said these security flaws were discovered and fixed during Austin and Kyoto upgrades. Both hard forks were tested in a private environment without disclosing the existence or specific vulnerabilities, and were successfully activated on the main network. This low-key update strategy is designed to prevent potential attackers from exploiting vulnerabilities before network hardening is complete. Polygon confirmed that no exploitation of these security vulnerabilities was observed on the main network. The team said the deployment of patches is a preventive measure designed to mitigate risks before information is made public.
Specific details of the fixed vulnerability
The most serious of these vulnerabilities involves the Heimdall layer of the Polygon network. According to Polygon, constructing special transactions can force verifiers to perform large amounts of calculations, which can lead to network outages. Austin hard fork also fixes two independent denial of service (DoS) vulnerabilities in the Bor component of the protocol. These risks can slow down block processing and even cause network nodes to crash. Polygon said these updates also strengthen the Heimdall and Bor layers, enhancing the network's ability to withstand potential attacks and improving overall system stability. Hard fork deployments remain confidential until Polygon engineers verify their effectiveness and confirm network security. Polygon emphasized that all vulnerabilities were fixed before public disclosure, and no exploitation incidents occurred on the main network, demonstrating the team's commitment to ensuring network security through silent preventive actions.

During the network upgrade, Polygon's native token POL (previously known as MATIC) was trading for close to $0.10. CoinGecko data shows that the token has fallen 4% in the past week, but has still risen 44% in the past month, with a year-to-date gain of 2.3%.
