IBM connects digital asset vault platform to SWIFT's blockchain shared ledger

IBM has connected its Digital Asset Haven platform to SWIFT's blockchain-based shared ledger. Seventeen global banks, including Bank of New York Mellon (BNY), Citigroup, HSBC, UBS and Wells Fargo, are using the ledger to pilot tokenized deposit transactions.

The technology giant announced two Beta updates to the platform on September 24, both for regulated financial institutions. "The financial services industry is entering a new era where tokenized assets and traditional assets need to operate in parallel," Tom McPherson, general manager of IBM Z and LinuxONE businesses, pointed out in an interview with The Block.

Be familiar with payment message formats

The first update is the ISO 20022 Messaging Adapter. It allows banks to use their existing payment message formats to indicate tokenized transactions without going through specific blockchain workflows. Participants can transfer funds around the clock, including weekends, and final settlement will still be completed through the existing system.

SWIFT showed off the ledger at the 2025 Sibos conference, which was built on a prototype from Consensus Sys and announced it will be commercially available in July after nine months of development. The pilot team also includes ANZ, BNP Paribas, DBS, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), Standard Chartered Bank and Lloyds Bank.

No public cloud environment required
