For the main network (chain ID 8453), the value is 1790791200, which is 18:00 UTC on September 30, 2026. There is an exact seven days difference between the two.

This sequence makes the main-network date more reliable than usually announced dates: the test-network completed its fork on September 23, and the maintenance window closed cleanly at 20:00 UTC. Updates that have been verified by TestNet are rarely abruptly withdrawn. This is different from networks where the activation date is calculated by ongoing validator voting and may change once the approval rate falls below the threshold.

What is a hard fork and why it's not a new currency

A hard fork is a change to blockchain rules that are no longer compatible with old rules. Any node that wants to verify network blocks needs to use new software. Nodes running older versions of software will regard the new block as invalid and exit the network.

The opposite concept is soft fork: rules are tightened only, old nodes still accept new blocks, and the network remains on one line even if it is not fully updated. Soft forks are backward compatible, while hard forks are incompatible.

In Cobalt, this problem does not arise because no new chains are born.

Despite this, there is still a practical explanation. If you withdraw a position from the exchange before freezing on September 30, the transfer is not a sale either-moving between your own two wallets will not trigger taxes. However, this action should be recorded in your files as a transfer rather than a disposal, otherwise the software will calculate a benefit for you in the future that never existed.

Hard fork clusters: What Core DAO, MultiversX, and BNB Chain show

This Base date is the latest example of a pattern that has been repeated several times in 2026, and the cases differ on one point: preparation time.

In BNB Chain and MultiversX, dates are fixed weeks in advance, exchanges announce freezes, and the process is uneventful. At the Core DAO, hard forks emerged as an emergency measure-holders had little time and transfer freezes caught many people off guard. The Base case is at the calm end of this series: it has been announced and tested online, with the time accurate to minutes.

The lessons that can be learned are less technical and more organizational. Anyone who permanently leaves a balance on an exchange relies on its schedule on such dates-and only knows when the freeze ends when they check it in person. Anyone who self-administers is not affected by the freeze, but assumes responsibility for their own access credentials. This is not a recommendation in either direction, but a trade-off that lies behind each date.

Base hard fork: How to do it now

Check Tuesday afternoon to see if you need to move any assets through Base that night.
