On September 1, 2026, cryptocurrency commentator Xaif (@Xaif_Crypto) claimed that Ripple had re-locked 1 billion XRPs into custody. The post quoted three transactions: 300 million XRPs were transferred to Ripple (1), 500 million XRPs were transferred to Ripple (17), and 200 million XRPs were transferred to Ripple (16). The news spread quickly, but the community almost immediately refuted it.
What the transaction shows
Ripple released 1 billion XRPs at the beginning of the month, a monthly routine in its custody program that has been launched since 2017. The release is divided into three batches: 500 million, 400 million and 100 million XRPs. This is standard process. The time-based custody contract for XRP ledgers will automatically trigger release on the 1st of each month.
The company re-locks 600 million to 800 million tokens after each release, but Xaif highlighted three new transactions totaling 1 billion XRPs. Other well-known figures such as Chad Steingraber also reported on this. However, they misunderstood the actual situation.
Two of the transactions (transfers of 500 million and 200 million XRPs) were confirmed as custody locked transactions. This means that the actual re-lock amount is 700 million XRPs, which is consistent with Ripple's historical custody model.

300 million XRP traded
The 300 million XRP deal transferred to Ripple (1) is controversial. Many community members pointed out this. Ben Smith pointed out that the 300 million transfers were a payment, not a custody lock, and had the exact same structure as the transfer made by Ripple the previous month. He shared a screenshot of a Whale Alert report from a well-known large-scale tracker, showing that 1 billion XRPs had been unlocked and 700 million XRPs had been locked. He also shared another screenshot showing that the first two transactions were escrow transactions, while 300 million XRP transfers were payments.
A cycle that keeps raising questions
Ripple's hosting system has been the subject of repeated speculation since its launch. Each month, as the unlock approaches, traders and analysts debate how much XRP will come back into circulation and what impact this will have on XRP prices. Patterns rarely change, but every discussion starts over again.
Many people accuse Ripple of selling XRP for profit through escrow releases. There has also been further speculation about significant uses for locked coins, including a 5 billion XRP deal that may involve Amazon. However, nothing seems to have occurred this month.
