Consensus is divided into two, MetaMask will move forward independently

Consensus announced the spin-off of consumer and institutional businesses, making MetaMask officially independent

On Wednesday, Consensus Software Inc. Announced the separation of its consumer and institutional businesses. The original company will be renamed MetaMask-a brand known for its cryptocurrency wallets; meanwhile, the newly formed Consensus will take over its Ethereum protocol and institutional blockchain infrastructure.

In terms of organizational structure, MetaMask will be chaired and CEO by Councilsys co-founder Joe Lubin. The newly formed Consensus sys will be led by CEO Mike Kriak and President David Cunningham, with Lubin serving as executive chairman.

The two companies will operate independently, clearly distinguishing MetaMask's consumer finance business from Consensus's Ethereum protocol and institutional blockchain infrastructure. It is expected that the split will be completed before the end of 2026.

Lubin said in a statement: "MetaMask has grown from our work to become the most widely used self-managed wallet in the world. Today, it is evolving into a larger platform: not only do people hold assets, but they also manage diverse and diverse forms of money." He added: "Working full-time is a focus on consumer finance, and we will give it the same focus and ambition as building Ethereum itself."

MetaMask's business expansion and ecological evolution

According to company data, MetaMask has more than 100 million downloads in about 190 countries around the world, and the cumulative transaction value reaches trillions of dollars. The wallet's functions go beyond mere storage and trading of cryptographic assets.

In June this year, MetaMask launched the "Money Account" feature, a self-managed feature that integrates stablecoin earnings, payments and transactions into a single balance. At the time, Johann Bornman, senior director of products at MetaMask, told the media that the company was committed to providing a "new banking experience."

In addition, MetaMask is also constantly breaking through its Ethereum foundation. Following its support for Solana, the company added Bitcoin support in December last year, allowing users to manage assets and BTC on Ethereum and other supporting networks under the same interface.

Previously, MetaMask launched its own stablecoin mUSD on Ethereum and its second-layer network Linea in 2025, and plans to use the token for payments through a MetaMask debit card.

New Consensys focuses on institutional infrastructure

The newly formed Consensys will continue to develop its core infrastructure products, including Linea, the Ethereum Layer 2 network, Besu, the Ethereum execution client for license chain networks, and Teku, the Ethereum consensus client. The company will focus on providing blockchain Infrastructure services to banks, asset management companies, payment providers and other financial institutions.

Lubin finally emphasized: "Looking to the future, the two companies will continue to build the same ecosystem, but their respective market focus will be adjusted based on current needs."
