Robinhood's cryptocurrency trading volume surged 61% to US$17.5 billion in August
Robinhood, a US-based online brokerage platform, reported a significant increase in its cryptocurrency trading volume in August 2026, up 61% month-on-month to US$17.5 billion. Although showing strong recovery momentum compared to July, the figure is still 38% lower than the August 2025 level.
Transaction Volume Breakdown Data
In its latest monthly operations update, Robinhood revealed that most crypto trading activity is conducted through Bitstamp, a digital asset exchange it acquired in June 2025. Bitstamp contributed $10.1 billion in transaction volume, while Robinhood trading app contributed $7.4 billion.
Bitstamp's monthly trading volume increased 53% from the previous month, but is still 30% below the level of a year ago. In contrast, transaction volume for the Robinhood app jumped significantly 72% month-on-month, but still fell 46% compared to August 2025.
Founded in 2011, Bitstamp is one of the longest-running cryptocurrency exchanges and is known for its euro-bitcoin trading pairs and compliance.

Overview of platform trading volume in August 2026
Quarterly revenue and trends
In the second quarter of 2026, Bitstamp was the main contributor to Robinhood's total cryptocurrency trading volume. The company's total transaction volume for the quarter was $40 billion, with Bitstamp recording $22 billion and Robinhood apps accounting for $18 billion.
Despite active trading volume, Robinhood's revenue from crypto transactions fell sharply to US$100 million in the second quarter, a 38% decrease from approximately US$160 million in the same period last year.
The company said strong growth in its event contracts, options and equity businesses made up for weak performance in digital asset trading, driving the brokerage firm's record quarterly revenue and earnings. Robinhood attributed record quarterly earnings to strong growth in event contracts, options and stocks, which offset declines in crypto trading revenue.
Exclusions and Future Outlook
Robinhood clarified that August's transaction volume data did not include crypto activity on its Ethereum-compatible decentralized network Robinhood Chain, which supports decentralized finance (DeFi) and cross-chain transactions.
A recent analysis by research firm Bernstein predicts that Robinhood Chain could generate approximately US$160 million in annual expenses by 2028, which will further diversify Robinhood's revenue sources.
The August report emphasized that despite a significant year-on-year decline in cryptocurrency trading volume in 2026, Robinhood continues to expand its footprint in digital assets through acquisitions and technology development.
