Hyperliquid's USDC earnings launch HYPE repurchase

Hyperliquid's USDC earnings begin to fund HYPE buybacks

Hyperliquid's AQAV2 reserve income arrangement has reportedly begun to generate funds, but this does not directly indicate that $14.58 million of HYPE has been purchased or destroyed. It was previously reported that the first payment was waiting to be transferred to Hyperliquid's Assistance Fund. The next stage is crucial: USDC must reach the fund, be used through the agreed repurchase process, and ultimately lead to HYPE being removed from circulation.

Reserve income is paid in the form of USDC. According to AQAv2 's schedule, the aid fund receives the funds. The purchase and destruction of HYPE are separate events on the chain.

AQAv2 brings a second source of funding to Hyperliquid

Hyperliquid's existing repurchase engine is tied to trading activity. Its fee document states that the aid foundation automatically converts transaction fees to HYPE and subsequently destroys them. As a result, higher trading volumes can generate more repo funds, which may reduce when the market is light.

AQAv2 changes this hybrid structure, increasing revenue related to USDC balances rather than transaction volume. Under the Aligned Quote Asset v2 framework, treasury deployers of qualified stablecoins will share approximately 90% of cost-adjusted reserve yield revenue with the agreement.

This statement is narrower than it may seem at first glance. It should be noted that this 90% share is applied after taking into account the costs defined by the arrangement; this means that Hyperliquid does not receive 90 cents from every dollar of total revenue generated by USDC reserves.

The agreement document also sets a 30-day payment cycle. Income will be sent to aid funds eight days after the end of a range, providing the system with a clear path from reserve income to funds that support HYPE buybacks.

Circle's role is technical, unlike the treasury role

Circle claims to be the technical deployer of USDC on Hyperliquid. This role covers the forging, redemption and cross-chain transfer of infrastructure, helping USDC flow between relevant parts of the Hyperliquid ecosystem.

This should not be confused with the role of treasury deployers sharing income from reserves under AQAv2. This difference affects the understanding of arrangements: technology providers maintain a stablecoin track, while treasury arrangements regulate the allocation of reserve income.

New revenue sources have different advantages and dependencies

As long as users continue to hold USDC in the ecosystem and underlying reserves continue to generate revenue, reserve revenue can continue to accumulate even if transactions cool down. This provides Hyperliquid with a funding channel that does not rely entirely on traders to open and close positions.

However, this is not fixed income. The amount may change with changes in the USDC balance, applicable reserve yields, and the terms of the AQAv2 framework. If stablecoin deposits or interest rates fall, future payments may decrease even if Hyperliquid's trading activity remains stable.

Therefore, this arrangement diversified the repurchase model rather than replacing a fee-based model. Trading fees are still tied to market activity; reserve revenue is more dependent on the size of USDC held on the platform and the yields available to those reserves.

Why first payments should not be annualized too quickly

The reported $14.58 million figure triggered estimates of larger annual contributions. A simple annualization can serve as a rough illustration, but it assumes that the USDC balance, interest rate environment and AQAv2 terms remain largely unchanged throughout the year.

These assumptions may not hold because Hyperliquid's USDC balance may increase or decrease, reserve yields may fluctuate with market interest rates, and the payment cycle itself needs to run consistently across multiple intervals to be considered a sustainable revenue model.

The better question is not whether the first payment will produce eye-catching annual numbers, but whether subsequent intervals will continue to generate funds and enter the aid fund, becoming observable HYPE purchases and destruction.

How to verify the model from here
