Bitcoin fell below $84,000: Four million-dollar USDC deposits triggered a 40-fold leveraged short

As the price of Bitcoin fell below $84,000, four newly created wallet accounts each deposited US$250,000 USDC (USD Coin), invested a total of US$1 million as collateral on the decentralized derivatives platform Hyperliquid, and immediately established a 40-fold leveraged short position against Bitcoin (BTC).

Four wallets, one million USDC and 40 times short exposure

These four wallets are newly created accounts, and the only activity recorded on their chain is this coordinated deposit and short position opening operation. Each wallet deposited US$250,000 in USDC into Hyperliquid. Hyperliquid is a decentralized perpetual contract exchange that allows traders to open leveraged positions without a centralized intermediary holding custody of funds.

Previously, during a period of increasing economic uncertainty, Bitcoin once fell below the US$95,000 mark, establishing a macro pattern in which the asset faced continued pressure. The so-called 40 times leveraged short position means that a trader has borrowed 40 times the capital he has deposited, betting that the price of Bitcoin will fall. Based on a total of US$1 million in deposits, this leverage ratio means a total short exposure to BTC of approximately US$40 million. Under 40 times leverage, if there is an unfavorable price fluctuation of 2.5%, the full collateral will be liquidated.

Structural significance of using USDC as collateral

Choosing USDC rather than BTC as collateral has significant structural implications. Paying margin in stablecoins means that traders do not need to hold Bitcoin when executing short strategies, and their downside risk is limited to the US$1 million already deposited, avoiding additional exposure caused by price fluctuations in the collateral itself (i.e. Bitcoin).

Implications for Bitcoin traders from this position dynamics

The combination of the Bitcoin price's drop below US$84,000 and the emergence of a new 40-fold short position creates two very different market scenarios:

  • If Bitcoin continues to fall: These short positions will be profitable and other market participants may intensify selling pressure after observing strong directional bearish signals.
  • If Bitcoin rebounds: These positions will face mandatory liquidation, and the exchange closing process may create buying pressure, which will drive prices up.

40x leverage is at the extreme level allowed by most perpetual contract platforms. At this ratio, the liquidation price is mathematically very close to the entry price, indicating that this is a high-confidence, short-term speculative bet rather than a hedging medium-term position. Traders can monitor whether these positions remain open or have been closed through Hyperliquid's public browser.

Institutional demand and the supporting role of ETF funds

Despite cyclical fluctuations in interest rates, institutional demand for Bitcoin continues to flow in through exchange-traded funds (ETFs) channels. For example, in September 2026, after the Federal Reserve made the interest rate decision, the Bitcoin ETF received a $2.65 billion inflow, which had a hedging effect on short pressure in the derivatives market.

ETF holders generally chose to hold rather than sell in the recent correction, indicating that spot buying remains solid despite leveraged short activity on decentralized platforms. Strategy achieved $21 billion in digital asset gains in the third quarter, and its 848,000 BTC holdings demonstrated the firm belief of long parties, in sharp contrast to such bearish derivatives transactions.

It is not possible to determine from on-chain data whether these four wallets represent decisions made by a single coordinated actor or independent trader based on the same logic. However, the uniform position size and synchronized operation timing at four different addresses imply artificial coordination.
