A fluctuation of about 3% in a single coin is enough to trigger a $36 million liquidation on the Ethereum DeFi chain-which once again rings the alarm: in the on-chain lending market, it is not the magnitude of price fluctuations that determines the pain threshold, but the leverage itself.
3% fluctuation liquidates US$36 million in collateral
A mild token price fluctuation triggered a wave of liquidations of Ethereum DeFi lending positions. Price changes are small, but the collateral effect cannot be underestimated. This incident occurred entirely within the Ethereum DeFi ecosystem-borrowers used volatile tokens as collateral to borrow stablecoins or ETH loans. When collateral prices are revalued and positions fall below the maintenance threshold, they are forced to close out on the chain.
Why small fluctuations can break up leveraged positions
Liquidation depends on health factors rather than apparent volatility. When a position's leverage ratio approaches its maximum loan-to-value ratio, a single-digit price revaluation is enough to trigger the liquidation line. This is why fluctuations of less than 5% eventually turned into eight-digit liquidations. When a liquidator throws confiscated assets into a similarly falling market, collateral pressure will intensify further and prices will be depressed, pushing adjacent positions to the liquidation threshold. This reflective cycle is the mechanism behind the chain of liquidations and explains why the total amount of dollar liquidations far exceeds the price trigger. DeFi risk watchers, including Steakhouse Financial and Pendle, flagged signs of stress in the Ethereum currency market on the X platform during position closures.
What this surge means for Ethereum DeFi traders
The key is leverage sensitivity, not direction judgment. When a small fluctuation in single digits can trigger an eight-digit liquidation, it means that a group of borrowers 'positions are very close to the liquidation line, and the entire system has insufficient buffer against fluctuations. For traders, the recent lesson is position discipline: maintaining health factors close to the clearing line can turn regular fluctuations into forced liquidations. This leverage risk is the same dynamic seen in derivatives markets-option positions near a specific price level outline where concentrated exposure lies. The incident also highlighted how policies and structures shape risk on the chain: from collateral parameter settings to broader token classification and governance discussions. Until the buffer space expands, Ethereum DeFi positions will remain sensitive to price fluctuations that are much smaller than their potential losses.
