These changes can disrupt contracts that rely on fixed Gas values or execution assumptions. However, developers say most Ethereum contracts should not be affected by the planned repricing. Mainnet trading testing identified a small number of contracts that could crash or degrade performance.
Ethereum Gas reform may expose hard-coded contract assumptions
EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 are designed to make Gas prices better reflect the resources required to operate in different states. The last time Ethereum adjusted its status operating pricing was in the Berlin upgrade in 2021. Since then, as applications store more information on the blockchain, Ethereum's state has expanded significantly. Therefore, developers want state-related costs to better match the resources consumed by these operations.
The Ethereum Foundation replayed historical mainnet transactions under the proposed Glamsterdam-pricing plan. Most transactions produce the same results, while some transactions require different Gas limits under the proposed rules.

These assumptions may involve fixed Gas values, Solidity's 2300 Gas allowance, or logic that relies on remaining Gas.
The foundation has begun contacting the builders of the affected contracts. At the same time, developers can test contracts based on the proposed plan before deploying GlamAmsterdam to the Ethereum main network. The Platåberget environment can be used to identify compatibility issues related to upgrades. The Gas adjustment is part of Ethereum's efforts to increase Layer 1 capacity. This solution supports the goal of triple basic throughput. As a result, developers view repricing as an important step before further increasing the network Gas limit. Glamstam merged changes to the execution and consensus layers into one Ethereum upgrade.
