Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) listed in the United States recorded their best monthly performance in August 2026, while Bitcoin also recorded its largest monthly increase since November 2024 during the same period.
According to SoSoValue, the net inflow of Bitcoin ETF reached US$3.52 billion in August, the highest monthly total in 2026, a significant increase from the net inflow of only US$172 million in July. Bitcoin (BTC) rose about 25% in August, its strongest monthly performance since surging 37.29% in November 2024, data from CoinGlass.
However, the strong momentum in August was quickly replaced by a weak start in September, when ETF fund flows turned negative, and Bitcoin once fell below US$77,000.
August reduced year-to-date net outflow by 66% to US$1.77 billion
The net inflow of Bitcoin ETF in August was US$3.52 billion, reducing year-to-date net outflow by approximately 66% from US$5.29 billion to US$1.77 billion. According to SoValue, the largest monthly net outflow occurred in June at $4.51 billion, followed by $2.43 billion in May and $1.61 billion in January.
Monthly capital flow of U.S. spot bitcoin ETF in 2026
Among the 21 trading days in August, 16 trading days recorded net inflows, including net inflows for nine consecutive trading days from August 17 to August 27. Total net assets rose from US$76.29 billion at the end of July to US$99.61 billion at the end of August, an increase of approximately 31%. Monthly trading volume climbed to US$58.63 billion from US$39.37 billion, an increase of nearly 49%.
Bitcoin ETF net outflow started in September of US$236 million
The U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF recorded a net outflow of $236.46 million on the first day of September (Tuesday), reversing Monday's net inflow of $216.7 million. The divestment was the largest one-day net outflow since a fund outflow of $265.37 million on July 31. The reversal comes as Bitcoin traded above $80,000 in late August, but briefly fell below $77,000 on Tuesday, according to data from CoinGecko.
Meanwhile, Ethereum and XRP ETFs remained positive on Tuesday. The spot Ethereum (ETH) ETF attracted about $11 million on Tuesday, while the spot XRP (XRP) ETF gained $14.4 million.
August pushed the Ethereum ETF into a positive growth area in 2026, with a year-to-date net inflow of US$732 million, while still at a loss of approximately US$1.12 billion at the end of July. The net inflow of XRP ETF year-to-date reached US$502 million, an increase of approximately 46% from US$343 million at the end of July.
