The Mesa upgrade of the Mina protocol is officially launched: the block generation time has been halved. What is the response of the MINA market?

According to the release notes released by o1 Labs on GitHub and the announcement of the official Mina Protocol blog, the Mina protocol upgrade codenamed "Mesa" has been officially deployed on the main network on September 3, 2026. This upgrade shortens block production time from 180 seconds to 90 seconds and expands the on-chain state capacity of ZK applications (zkApps).

Mina Protocol also confirmed the launch of the Mesa main network in an article on Platform X (formerly Twitter), pointing out that despite the increase in network capacity, the storage footprint (footprint/footprint) of the Mina blockchain of only 22KB remains unchanged. For ordinary users, the 90-second change is the most significant difference in daily activities. The incident was also reported through tweets on Platform X, emphasizing the evolution of network miniaturization as capabilities increase.

What is a Mina Mesa upgrade?

Simply put, the Mina Mesa hard fork contains four Mina Improvement Proposals (MIPs) and a mechanism change. For details, please refer to the official Mesa release document published by o1 Labs on GitHub. Community members call this the largest Mina zkApps upgrade to date because it directly expands the range of apps developers can build.

Mina upgrade function list

  • MIP6 (slot reduction): Achieve 90-second ejection time, doubling the confirmation speed.
  • MIP7 (status restriction):Directly increase the on-chain status limit from 8 fields to 32 fields.
  • MIP8 (Event/Action Restrictions): Increase the capacity of zkApps to support richer, more expressive applications.
  • MIP9 (Account Update Restrictions): allows more logical processing to be included in a single zkApp transaction.
  • Automatic hard fork mechanism: eliminates the manual coordination steps required for future upgrades.

When will the Mina upgrade take effect?

According to official documents from the Mina Protocol, the September 2026 network upgrade follows two key milestones. The Mina main network upgrade started at the stop transaction slot that officially started at 10:00 UTC on September 3. At this time, the upgraded verification nodes began to generate empty blocks. The stop network slot was then entered at 15:00 UTC, suspending block production for the entire Protocol main network infrastructure.

Mina's September 2026 hard fork ended in a few hours. With the activation of the 4.0.0 stable version, a smooth transition was achieved between verification nodes. Specific parameters are compared as follows:

According to CoinGecko data, the current trading price of MINA tokens is approximately US$0.08267, up 2.1% in the past 24 hours, and the market value is US$106,739 million. Over the past 24 hours, token prices have fluctuated between US$0.08027 and US$0.08393, with transaction volume reaching US$7.671 million.

After the upgrade, MINA prices remained stable and did not surge sharply, indicating that the market may have fully absorbed the incident before then. Analysts warned that any forecast of token prices after upgrades should be viewed with caution, because network upgrades do not guarantee price changes, and market trends also depend on the broader crypto market environment.

Analysts see the benefits of Mina protocol upgrade to ZkApps

Market observers believe that in the short term, protocol upgrades may be more significant to developers than to traders. Faster confirmation speeds and higher status limits may reduce the need for ZkApp builders to split transactions into multiple blocks.

The 2026 blockchain upgrade cycle may also lay the foundation for future expansion work, although the project has not yet detailed a fixed roadmap beyond Mesa's scope. In addition, the release of o1 Labs also introduces an automatic upgrade model for node operators, simplifying future hard fork operations.
