Canada approves XRP ETF options, major banks disclose new positions
XRP has achieved important milestone progress in Canada as Canada's top financial regulator approved a legal infrastructure to connect U.S. capital markets with XRP-based financial products. The move gives Canadian investors and institutions access XRP-based traded open-end index funds (ETFs) options that allow indirect access to cryptocurrencies through derivatives in a regulated environment and include expiration dates for trading positions.
Regulatory Licensing and Critical Platforms
This approval allows Canada's major banks to participate in the XRP asset class through regulated investment vehicles. According to official documents from the Canadian Derivatives Clearing Corporation (CDCC), two major XRP-based ETFs-the XRP Evolve ETF and the XRP Purpose ETF-have been licensed to trade in the United States.
The CDCC, which is responsible for clearing and settlement of derivatives in Canada, pointed out in its latest Form 8-K report that these XRP-linked products have been traded on the Montreal Stock Exchange since early 2026.
As this regulation develops, XRP joins other major digital assets that already enjoy trading status in options ETFs in the Canadian market, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL).
Dictionary: Canadian Derivatives Clearing Corporation (CDCC) - CDCC is the central counterparty for derivatives traded on the Canadian Exchange and provides clearing and settlement services to enhance market transparency and reduce counterparty risk.
Major Canadian banks expand XRP exposure
The approval comes at a time when two major Canadian banks-National Bank of Canada and Bank of Montreal-disclose their initial investments in XRP-related products. National Bank of Canada disclosed its share of Bitwise ETF worth US$330,000. At the same time, Bank of Montreal reported owning more than 350 shares of XRP-related stocks in its Form 13F-HR filing.
These developments suggest that institutional recognition of XRP is increasing in Canada's regulated financial landscape. Amid this wave of regulatory progress, leading Canadian banks such as National Bank of Canada and Bank of Montreal have begun reporting significant XRP ETF positions they hold, reflecting the growing institutional presence in the asset.
Security, Accessibility and Investor Protection
Banks of Canada do not need to purchase Ripple's XRP tokens directly through the spot market. Instead, they exposed XRP's price fluctuations and its ecosystem by using regulated U.S. investment products. This approach allows institutional and retail investors to indirectly participate in the cryptocurrency market with additional regulatory supervision and protection.
The use of packaged products such as ETFs provides an additional layer of protection for traditional stock market participants, in line with best practices for risk mitigation. For investors who prefer to use standard brokerage accounts, XRP ETF options eliminate the need for cryptocurrency self-custody or managed mnemons. These options are settled on the balance sheet when they expire, providing additional convenience for those unfamiliar with managing digital wallets.
