Ethereum News: Under quantum risk and Glamestead testing, ETH price remains at US$2466
Ethereum is making headlines again today for two very different reasons. Researchers have published new findings that suggest that artificial intelligence (AI) may accelerate quantum attacks on major blockchains in the future, while core developers are struggling to cope with a bumpy testing process ahead of the Glamsburg upgrade. At the same time, ETH prices remained relatively stable, trading at close to $2,466. The following is an interpretation of the current situation and its importance in popular language.
Overview of key points
Latest developments | Why it matters
- Quantum research: An AI-optimized version of Shor algorithm requires a long-term anti-quantum plan.
- Logic qubit requirements: reduced to 1151, and subsequent work further reduced to 813, lowering the theoretical resource threshold for attacks.
- Glamestead Devnet-9: cannot be finalized normally, indicating that there are still difficulties in actual testing.
- Devnet-10: will be launched in the next few weeks, which may determine whether the Sepolia date is held as scheduled.
- Sepolia Test Network: October 6 is tentatively scheduled for 13:53 UTC, which is Glamestead's first public milestone.
- Hoodi Test Network: No date has been set, more tests are needed.
- Main network release: December is a goal rather than a promise, depending on how well the client software is running.
- ETH price: US$2,465.80, down about 0.3%, providing today's market background.
Ethereum Quantum Research reduces attack resource requirements for Bitcoin and ETH by more than 50%
A team of researchers from the Ethereum Foundation, Theta Labs, StarkWare and others have released a paper showing how AI-driven program agents can be used to fine-tune the core mathematical principles of the Shor algorithm. The Shor algorithm is a quantum method widely discussed as posing a theoretical threat to blockchain cryptography. According to the paper, this optimization would more than halve the computing resources required for potential quantum attacks on the secp256k1 system used by Bitcoin and Ethereum compared to a benchmark released by Google in March last year.
The team said the number of logic qubits required for such attacks has been reduced to 1,151, and subsequent improvements have further reduced the number to 813. These are huge theoretical numbers that are far from the capabilities that today's quantum computers can actually provide.
What AI-optimized quantum research means for Ethereum
One thing needs to be clear here: no existing quantum computer currently has the ability to crack the cryptography of Ethereum or Bitcoin. What this research really shows is that pure software and algorithmic improvements, aided by AI, can close the gap on paper faster than expected.
The team behind the study saw this as a call to action rather than an alarm. They emphasized that quantum-resistant upgrades of blockchain take a long time to design, test and deploy, and some of this work cannot be solved simply through later remediation. Their message is that the industry should start preparing defenses before quantum hardware catches up with theory.
Ethereum Glamstam upgrade is tentatively scheduled to be activated on Sepolia on October 6
In terms of network upgrades, the minutes of the ACDC #186 Developer Conference show that Ethereum engineers have listed October 6, 13:53 UTC, as the target date for activating the Glamstam upgrade on the Sepolia Test Network. It is important to note that this is a tentative plan for the public test network and not a confirmed main-network release.
Devnet-10 becomes a key test before Sepolia's upgrade
The reason for caution is that a stable devnet has not yet emerged. Devnet-9 has a large set of validators when it starts, but it is difficult to finalize normally. Its predecessor, Devnet-8, previously exposed a serious vulnerability in the consensus layer, while a separate issue was found in EIP-8037 at the execution layer that required updates from various client teams. Developers plan to launch Devnet-10 now, and the network's performance is likely to determine whether the Oct. 6 Sepolia date is held as scheduled or postponed.
There is still no exact date for the release of Ethereum Glamsterdam-main network
Except for Sepolia, the timetable has become even more uncertain. Developers have not set a date for Hoodi testnet or mainnet activation. The December release is still a hope, matching Fusaka's on-time delivery pace last year, but the current client readiness does not indicate that this goal has been targeted.
Ethereum Glamstam timeline: From Devnet testing to potential mainnet release
Devnet-8 to Devnet-9 to Devnet-10, then Sepolia on October 6 (tentative), followed by Hoodi with a pending date, and an unconfirmed mainnet target for a point in December.
Today's Ethereum ETH price: Trading close to US$2,466
On the market side, ETH price today was US$2,465.80, down about 0.3% in the past 24 hours. Trading volume is close to US$15.99 billion, and Ethereum has a market value of approximately US$300.9 billion.
What these Ethereum developments mean for ETH investors and the network
Taken together, Ethereum's latest news reflects an ecosystem that thinks about two timelines simultaneously: the distant but real issue of anti-quantum issues and the near-term challenge of securely delivering major protocol upgrades. Neither story points to an emergency, but both highlight the meticulous and sometimes slow engineering work that continues behind the scenes behind the Ethereum price fluctuations.
