Tokenization News: Key Facts

Securitize and LG CNS signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday, clarifying three planned areas of cooperation: identifying tokenization opportunities for financial institutions in South Korea and the Asia-Pacific region, building tokenization technology that conforms to South Korea's regulatory framework, and developing stablecoins and digital asset custody infrastructure. The two companies said any infrastructure designed to connect the South Korean market with the global market for round-the-clock settlement of tokenized securities and stablecoins will still need to comply with applicable laws and obtain regulatory approval.

Securitize is a tokenization platform listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the operator behind the BlackRock BUIDL fund; LG CNS has previously built tokenization infrastructure for Korean banks and domestic securities companies.

The memorandum of understanding signed by Securitize and LG CNS on Tuesday details three specific areas in which the two companies plan to work together in South Korea: exploring tokenization opportunities for financial institutions, building tokenization technologies that adapt to South Korea's regulatory framework, and developing stablecoins and digital asset custody infrastructure.

The agreement is not legally binding, and the two companies carefully define each element as exploratory. Securitize and LG CNS said they "intend" to combine their respective professional experience and "will explore" relevant solutions, but the launch of any specific product must comply with applicable laws, obtain regulatory approval, and go through each company's internal compliance process.

Coverage of three key areas

The first area is research work: The companies will look for banks, asset managers and other institutions in South Korea and the wider Asia-Pacific region that may wish to issue or trade tokenized assets, securities or stablecoins. The two companies said they will cooperate with joint efforts to educate the market and build specific application scenarios.

The second area is narrower: it aims to build tokenized products around South Korean financial institutions 'own rules, rather than providing a universal solution, as South Korea's regulatory framework is still improving.

The third area is the most extensive and carries the most regulatory uncertainty. It covers stablecoin infrastructure and digital asset custody products, as well as the two companies 'publicly stated ambition: an infrastructure that can ultimately allow round-the-clock settlement of South Korea's tokenized assets with global markets, if approved by regulators.

Carlos Domingo, co-founder and CEO of Securitize, said: "South Korea has one of the most advanced technology and financial markets in the world, making it a critical market for the next phase of institutional tokenization." Kim Hongkeun, head of LG CNS's digital business unit, said the goal was to help South Korean institutions "build practical and regulatory applications" as the country entered what he called a "critical stage of asset tokenization."

Background behind the transaction

Securitize was listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the SECZ symbol on July 2 through a merger with Cantor Fitzgerald-backed special purpose acquisition firm Cantor Equity Partners II. According to a regulatory filing, as of December 31, 2025, the company managed more than US$3.1 billion in tokenized real-world assets, accounting for approximately 19% of the market share.

LG CNS is not new to South Korea's tokenization work. It built the issuance infrastructure for Koscom's KoSTO platform, a shared security token system used by multiple securities companies, including Hyundai Motor Securities, and participated in the Bank of Korea deposit token pilot project with seven other major commercial banks. The memorandum of understanding adds global partners to South Korea's tokenized securities system, which is scheduled to take effect in February 2027.
