October 8: Bitcoin and Ethereum spot ETF funds continue to flow out, and institutional investors are cautious

On October 8, U.S. spot Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) continued to face pressure from investors to withdraw capital. According to Farside Investors 'ETF fund flow data, in the latest trading day, the Bitcoin ETF recorded a net redemption amount of US$244.1 million, while the Ethereum ETF lost another US$72.5 million. The two types of funds combined lost $316.6 million in a single day.

The latest data shows that institutional investors are currently very cautious. This has also raised questions about whether the historically bullish market narrative of "Uptober" can be fulfilled as scheduled this year.

Bitcoin ETF's net outflow exceeded US$800 million in the first six trading days of October.

According to statistics, Bitcoin ETF recorded a cumulative net redemption amount of more than US$820 million in the first six trading days of October, and the redemption rate accelerated in the second week.

Among them, the largest redemption in a single day occurred on October 7, when investors withdrew $484.9 million from the fund that day. Subsequently, on October 8, another $244.1 million in redemptions flowed out.

In terms of specific fund performance:

  • BlackRock (BlackRock)'s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) recorded a redemption of $5.5 million on its latest trading day;
  • Fidelity (Fidelity)'s FBTC fund lost $197.1 million;
  • Bitwise's BITB and Ark Invest's ARKB recorded net outflows of $17.7 million and $20.3 million respectively;
  • Franklin Templeton's EZBC was one of the few funds to attract funds, recording a net inflow of $4.7 million.

Ethereum ETF faces more severe selling pressure

Ethereum ETF also experienced a challenging October. As of October 8, total net redemptions of the Ethereum ETF have exceeded US$5.6 billion.

The largest redemption in a single day occurred on October 6, when the Ethereum fund lost $201.9 million, followed by $160.9 million on October 7. On October 8, BlackRock's ETHA fund recorded a redemption of $71.1 million, Fidelity's FETH fund attracted an inflow of $5.5 million, and Grayscale's ETHA fund lost $6.1 million.

Bitcoin and Ethereum prices both fell

The withdrawal of funds from ETFs coincided with an overall sell-off in the cryptocurrency market. In the past 24 hours, the price of Bitcoin has fallen by approximately 0.44%, and as of press time on October 8, the transaction price was US$82,660.

Ethereum is facing similar selling pressure, with its price fluctuating around $2,500 as investors reduce exposure to risky assets.

The market decline intensified as leveraged traders faced approximately US$1.19 billion in cryptocurrency clearing losses overnight. Among them, the liquidation value of Ethereum positions is approximately US$356 million, and the liquidation value of Bitcoin positions is approximately US$298 million.
