Aptos Foundation, seven reform plans for the APT token economy released

The Aptos Foundation has announced seven plans aimed at changing the APT token economy. The plan includes permanently locking in 210 million APTs, reducing the pledge reward rate from 5.19% to 2.6%, and increasing transaction fees tenfold. The foundation also recommends setting a supply cap of 2.1 billion APTs. The purpose is to increase the amount of destruction caused by network activities while reducing the issuance of new tokens. However, some changes still need to await governance approval.

Why should we adjust the supply of APT?

Currently, approximately 1.196 billion APTs are in circulation. The foundation hopes to change the issuance model that supports the initial growth of the network and link token allocation to network performance. The four-year unlocking cycle for investors and core contributors will end in October 2026. The foundation expects this to reduce annual token unlocks by approximately 60%. As grant allocations transition from 2026 to 2027, annual declines are also expected to exceed 50%.

How will APT pledge rewards and transaction fees change?

The Aptos Foundation plans to reduce the annual pledge reward rate from 5.19% to 2.6%, and increase the initial increase in network Gas fees to 10 times for submission to the governance process. In addition, the foundation is evaluating options for higher reward rates for long-term pledge commitments.

Transaction fees on Aptos are paid in APT and permanently destroyed. Increased fees may increase the number of tokens destroyed with trading activity. The foundation predicts that even if the fee increases 10 times, the fee for stablecoin transfers will remain at approximately US$0.00014.

Why should 210 million APTs be locked?

The Foundation announced that it will permanently lock and pledge 210 million APTs. This amount accounts for approximately 18% of the current circulation supply. These tokens will not be sold or distributed, but will be used as collateral to support network security.

In addition, the foundation recommends setting a rigid supply cap of 2.1 billion APTs. Based on current circulation, there is still room for approximately 904 million APTs to reach this upper limit. If the proposal is passed, no new tokens will be generated beyond this limit.

Can Decibel destroy 32 million APTs every year?

Decibel, a decentralized exchange (DEX) developed on Aptos, may play an important role in increasing token destruction. Pending orders, matching and cancellation operations on the platform are performed directly on the chain and consume Gas fees.

The foundation predicts that if Decibel expands to more than 100 trading markets next year, more than 32 million APTs could be destroyed each year. This is not an established fact, but an estimate based on specific growth assumptions.

Other measures in the plan include linking future grants to measurable performance goals and evaluating a programmatic APT repurchase mechanism funded by foundation income.

Will APT supply enter a deflationary stage?

The goal of the Aptos Foundation is to make the number of APTs destroyed exceed the number of new tokens entering circulation. Reduced pledge rewards, increased transaction costs, Decibel's activities, permanent lock-in and performance-linked allocation mechanisms are all designed to support this goal.

However, it is unclear when APT will enter the deflationary phase. The final result will depend on the adoption of governance proposals and growth in network usage. For investors, important indicators to observe will be the official voting results, as well as Decibel's actual trading volume and token destruction data.
