Jeonbuk Bank launches South Korea's first bitcoin-backed corporate loan

As a subsidiary of JB Financial Group, Jeonbuk Bank has officially launched Bitcoin mortgage loan services for corporate customers, marking it becoming the first South Korean commercial bank to provide such services.

South Korea's first Bitcoin mortgage loan

According to South Korean media reports, Jeonbuk Bank now accepts Bitcoin (BTC) as collateral for Korean won loans. Currently, this service is mainly for corporate customers seeking working capital and is temporarily closed to individual consumers.

In order to manage the risks posed by digital asset mortgages, Jeonbuk Bank cooperates with a professional custodian to securely keep the bitcoins deposited by borrowers. The bank said the arrangement enables banks to offer loan services without directly storing or holding customers 'cryptocurrency assets. [TAG

Bank officials noted that loan applications will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and details such as the approved amount, interest rate and specific loan-to-value ratio (LTV) have not been made public. The bank confirmed that at least one corporate loan had been made through the project, but declined to disclose the identity of the borrower.

Regulatory framework supports innovation

The launch of the loan facility benefited from amendments to South Korea's Civil Enforcement Act, which came into effect on October 1. The Supreme Court has established new procedures to regulate the seizure and liquidation of virtual assets when a borrower defaults.

In the event of a default, the court may order the sale of the pledged bitcoins, and Jeonbuk Bank has the right to recover the outstanding loan balance from the proceeds of the sale. This mechanism allows banks to manage loans backed by crypto-assets without having to directly custody the underlying digital assets.

Representative of Jeonbuk Bank explained that the company has adopted a mechanism to ensure loan recoveries are made through cryptocurrency sales under court orders, thereby eliminating the need for banks to hold or liquidate assets themselves.

Small Dictionary: Jeonbuk Bank is a well-known regional bank in South Korea. It is affiliated with JB Financial Group, which provides a wide range of financial services to individuals and companies across the country.

Industry Background

This move makes Jeonbuk Bank a pioneer in integrating cryptocurrencies into South Korea's mainstream banking system. This development comes at a time when trading activity and profit margins on local cryptocurrency exchanges have declined significantly.

As of now, Jeonbei Bank and JB Financial Group have not issued additional statements on plans to expand the crypto asset collateralized loan program or expand their services to a wider customer base in the future.

Jeonbuk Bank has implemented a system that allows banks to recover loans through court-ordered cryptocurrency sales, rather than directly processing digital assets.

Market participants are closely watching the response to the product and whether other banks will follow Jeonbuk Bank and enter the crypto-asset mortgage market.
