Japan's Bitcoin Industry launches the Aurora platform to help content creators make cross-border payments
Japan's Bitcoin Industry (JBI) has released a Bitcoin payment platform called Aurora, which aims to help Japanese content creators and merchants sell products to international audiences, thereby avoiding the cumbersome processes caused by traditional cross-border payment systems. The platform will be officially unveiled at the "Bitcoin Asia" conference held in Hong Kong in 2026.
Focus on anime, comics and games
Aurora is designed for Japanese merchants who sell anime, comics, video games and other digital content overseas. JBI pointed out that traditional payment infrastructure has long failed to fully meet the needs of international fans, resulting in a disconnect between global market demand and the actual revenue capabilities of Japanese sellers. And this gap is widening-in 2024, Japanese animation overseas revenue will increase by 26% year-on-year to 2.17 trillion yen (approximately US$14.27 billion), accounting for 56% of the industry's total sales that year. Aurora is positioned as a direct solution to help merchants turn international interest into actual sales.
Self-hosted Lightning Internet Payment
Payments on Aurora run through the Bitcoin Lightning Network. Lightning Network is a layer 2 protocol that can complete transaction settlement offline, achieving faster processing speeds and lower rates than on-chain Bitcoin transfers. JBI describes its infrastructure as a fast, low-cost payment channel based on the Lightning Network, available in more than 150 countries. Every merchant that enters Aurora operates its own self-hosted lightning node, which means that JBI handles operational matters, but never manages merchant funds. Buyers directly trade with sellers, and control of funds is always in the hands of merchants throughout the process. The platform includes a point-of-sale system and API interfaces that allow merchants to manage invoices, track payment status, and integrate Aurora into existing technology architecture. During the Hong Kong conference, JBI invited potential merchants, media and wallet providers to connect with its team.
This release further promotes the popularity of Bitcoin in Japan. In recent years, the use of Lightning Network in Japanese exchanges and companies has continued to expand.
