Lake Placid, New York holds a hearing on temporary land use ban for AI data centers and cryptocurrency mining
Lake Plattsburgh, New York recently held a public hearing to discuss a proposal to implement a temporary land use ban for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and cryptocurrency mining and other operating activities.
At a hearing on Thursday, Lake Placid Mayor Wendell Hughes and town council members heard public opinion on a proposed bill. The bill aims to impose a short-term ban on land use involving "certain energy-intensive computing facilities," including cryptocurrency mining and artificial intelligence-related businesses. If the ban is passed, approval will be suspended for 12 months for all operating projects with power requirements reaching or exceeding 300 kilowatts (kW).
As of Tuesday, reports showed that the mayor had not formally approved the temporary ban. The town council plans to hold its next meeting on September 17 to further review the matter.
Lake Placid was one of the first jurisdictions in the United States to directly ban Bitcoin (BTC) mining, a move designed to respond to residents 'concerns about rising electricity costs. The ban was passed in 2018 and lasted for 18 months.
In recent years, as the industry has faced challenges, rising power costs and falling token prices, many cryptocurrency mining companies have shifted their business focus to artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.
