Cryptocurrency payment card transactions hit record highs, with stablecoins and cross-border demand becoming the main drivers.
In 2026, the total amount of payments on cryptocurrency-linked cards soared to a record high of US$12.5 billion, an increase of 140% from the January level. According to tracking data from paymentscan.xyz, this figure has increased significantly by 247% compared with the transaction size in October 2025.
The expansion of stablecoin payment infrastructure and the reduction of international fund transfer costs are the main catalysts driving this surge. In addition, Jupiter Spend reported that the number of its activation cards increased by 55% month-on-month, which was largely due to the popularity of QR code payments.
At the same time, companies such as Fold Holdings and Aven have launched new credit cards with Bitcoin as the core. These products have entered the market with their unique reward structures and mortgage lending functions, further enriching the industry ecosystem.
Key factors driving growth
This expansion is mainly driven by two major trends. First, stablecoins are increasingly becoming the basic payment infrastructure for daily transactions. Last week, crypto card spending hit an all-time high with strong performance on multiple projects: VaultLeap grew 71.9%, Ethena Pay grew 36.9%, Avalanche grew 25.8%, Tria grew 23.7%, and Wirex One grew 19.8%.
Secondly, there is a growing demand for international payment solutions aimed at reducing costs and shortening settlement times in traditional banking channels. Stable coins enable the transfer of value across borders while avoiding delays and high handling fees common to traditional financial institutions.
Merchants 'acceptance of QR code payments is also expanding, and more and more retailers are beginning to support scanning code payment systems connected to cryptocurrency wallets. These trends are reflected in platform data: Jupiter Spend, one of the chain card providers, reported that its activation card count jumped 55% from the previous quarter.
New card issuing products appear on the market
The consumer boom coincides with the influx of new card issuing products. Earlier this year, Fold Holdings launched the distribution of its Fold Bitcoin credit cards. The initial release is open to waiting list members and will subsequently be open to a wider audience through a phased rollout in the coming weeks and months.
The card runs on Visa's global network and is supported by back-office infrastructure provided by Stripe Issuing, covering 175 million merchant collection points around the world. Users can receive a 1.5% Bitcoin basic cash rebate, and increase the return to 4% through activity multiplier and merchant cooperation. Using Bitcoin to settle monthly bills can also earn an additional 0.5% reward on top of this.
Aven adopted a different strategy. The company launched the Aven Bitcoin Visa card at the 2026 Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas. The card allows users to use their Bitcoin holdings as collateral to obtain loans rather than sell assets. The credit line can be up to US$1 million, with an annual interest rate starting from 7.99%, and borrowers can choose a repayment plan of up to 10 years. BitGo is responsible for holding loan collateral, and Coastal Community Bank serves as the issuing financial institution.
