Bitcoin exposure can be achieved by holding coins, fund shares or derivatives. Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETP) may hold BTC, while investors trade shares of the product. Different products may differ in terms of transaction hours, fees, custody and withdrawal rights.
Three account balances may follow the same BTC chart
There may be several very different ways to hold positions hidden behind the price of Bitcoin. Buyers may control transferable coins, own listed securities issued by funds, or hold contracts linked to the market. Although the price movements in each case seem familiar, the rights and responsibilities of the holders vary.
01 Bitcoin balance in wallet
The holder controls the signing key and can send BTC on the chain. Security depends on mnemonics, equipment and transaction approvals.
02 Shares of spot Bitcoin ETP
Funds may hold BTC through custodians, while investors own listed securities traded through brokers.
03 Bitcoin futures positions
Investors have contracts pegged to a reference price, where margins, expiration dates and derivative market pricing may affect the results.
Therefore, the word "Bitcoin" alone does not determine ownership issues. Wallet holders control assets on the chain. Positions held by shareholders and futures traders are subject to the rules of the securities or derivatives market.
Bitcoin ETP establishes a fund between investors and coins

Price exposure and ownership are two independent decisions
Bitcoin in the wallet gives the holder a transferable asset and direct responsibility for security. Stock exchange products can provide a familiar path to markets with the same price, while placing custody, trading and settlement within the financial infrastructure.
Neither approach is suitable for all investors. An important step is to identify assets in your account before purchasing, rather than relying on Bitcoin tags or matching price charts.
