THORChain unlocks TRON channel USDT: US$1.45 million in funds restored access, but market liquidity impact is limited
After about three hours of freezing, Tether (USDT) lifted restrictions on four TRON chain vaults on THORChain, and USDT worth approximately US$1.45 million became accessible again. With the lifting of restrictions, THORChain restored TRON's transaction, deposit and transaction signature functions. However, 19 other addresses blacklisted in the same freeze remain restricted.
Incident Review and Official Response
This incident briefly interrupted the stablecoin channel used for cross-chain transactions. According to reports, although the addresses of the four vaults were previously removed from the blacklist, their balances remained intact. Chad Barraford, co-founder of THORChain technology, said the project did not receive any advance communication or explanation before receiving notice of restrictions. Before resuming the visit, the team tried to contact Tether to clarify whether this was caused by a misunderstanding.
Barraford subsequently confirmed that the address had been unfrozen and the transaction would return to normal. The four addresses allegedly left the blacklist at 15:30 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Since then, THORChain has quickly restarted TRON related transaction, deposit and transaction signature services. This distinction limits the scope of the unblocking: USDT access has been restored to the affected protocol vault, while restrictions elsewhere remain in effect. This reversal does not represent a general lifting of wallet control.
The contradiction between decentralized infrastructure and centralized control
For traders, the operational focus is whether trading on the affected channel can continue; for liquidity providers, the restoration of service means that interrupted functions can be reconnected. The incident highlighted the risks of external dependence faced by agreements that use centralized issuance of stablecoins. Decentralized infrastructure does not eliminate issuer controls attached to these tokens.
Tether USDT operates within an established framework that allows wallet restrictions to be implemented. As early as December 2023, issuers announced an expansion of secondary market freezes to cover wallets related to sanctioned persons. Therefore, this partial thaw only solved specific operational disruption issues and did not bring new capital inflows or stronger signals of demand for cryptocurrencies.
Liquidity analysis in the context of TRON supply growth
The broader liquidity discussion focuses on the growing supply of stablecoins on the TRON network. Data shows that the annual supply of USDT on the TRON chain increased by US$18.67 billion to a total of US$94.25 billion, an increase of approximately 24.7%. These data help explain why disruptions involving TRON can have a significant impact on traders using the stablecoin infrastructure.
However, the US$1.45 million released represents only approximately 0.0015% of reported network supply. The significance is mainly to restore specific services rather than to change the purchasing power of the overall market. During the freeze period, USDT already in the treasury will remain part of the existing supply. The lifting of restrictions only makes these balances available again and does not prove new investor deposits or new token issuance.
Differences between market-leading indicators and real purchasing power
In addition, USDT's market dominance has fallen from resistance near 6.7% in September. A mere decline in dominance does not confirm that holders are buying Bitcoin or other altcoins. This ratio compares the market value of stablecoins with the total market value of the entire cryptocurrency market. As other assets appreciate, the ratio may fall even if stablecoin holdings do not decrease accordingly.
Similarly, a higher supply of stablecoins does not determine how holders intend to deploy their funds. The balance may be used for payments, transfers, collateral or trading activities. As a result, any claim that Tether USDT will drive a rebound will need to be backed up by additional evidence of actual buying. The reopening of the vault itself does not measure subsequent Bitcoin or altcoin purchases. As of the time of report, the remaining 19 addresses were still restricted.
