Google announced an investment of 13 billion euros in Finland over the next two years
In the next two years, Google will invest 13 billion euros in Finland to build data centers, develop clean energy and support community projects. These facilities will be powered by nuclear energy.
Google announced on Wednesday that it has signed a 22-year agreement to extend the life of its Loviisa nuclear power plant. The company said it was one of its largest single investments in Europe.
This huge investment comes as European governments are scrambling to prevent the transfer of artificial intelligence infrastructure to the United States. At the same time, Google's investment in Finland has also doubled its previous commitment in Germany.
Hamina: Google's strategic center of gravity in Europe
Hamina is the "center of gravity" of Google's strategic landscape. Fifteen years ago, Google transformed an abandoned paper mill into a data center here. Bikash Koley, Google's vice president of global infrastructure, said in an announcement that the new funding is aimed at meeting the growing demand for search services, map applications and the Gemini artificial intelligence model.
Google revealed that from 2023 to 2025, more than 600 Finnish suppliers participated in the construction, operation and maintenance and optical fiber network work during the construction and operation of its Hamina project.
The scale of this new commitment far exceeds other recent initiatives by Google in Europe. According to media reports, in November 2025, Google promised to invest approximately 5.5 billion euros (approximately 6.4 billion US dollars) to expand data centers in Dietzenbach and Hanau, Germany. The amount of investment in Finland this time is more than twice that figure.
Clean energy and employment dividends
In addition to the cooperation with the Lovisa nuclear power plant, Google also announced an increase in onshore wind power installed capacity and signed a contract for a 94-megawatt battery system. The company said the system would help stabilize fluctuations in electricity prices during "cold and windless" times.
Wind and solar power cannot provide stable baseload power, while nuclear power provides reliable baseload support, which is becoming an increasingly important consideration for operators of artificial intelligence facilities that consume huge amounts of energy.
Google expects the project to create more than 37,000 jobs nationwide. During the construction period in 2027 and 2028, it will contribute 3.6 billion euros to Finland's gross domestic product (GDP) each year. The company also said it would create thousands of long-term positions once the facility is operational, covering roles such as engineers, security personnel and catering service personnel.
Deeply cultivate local communities
Google plans to allocate € 31 million to four communities: Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala over the next four years. The budget will be used to provide artificial intelligence skills improvement training to more than 4,400 workers through local colleges.
In addition, the funding will fund 100 students to participate in training courses to prepare them for future data center careers. Google said it will also fund the restoration of native forests and wetlands near its site and build recreational trails, public saunas and fishing docks.
