Visa, Mastercard and Ant International jointly announced a standard for mutual recognition of AI agent identities
On September 10, 2026, Visa, Mastercard and Ant International announced that the three parties are cooperating to develop the "Know Your Agent"(KYA) interoperability framework. This is a common standard system designed to identify and verify AI agents making purchases on behalf of users.
The framework will allow card organizations, digital wallets, agent platforms, and online marketplaces to identify trusted AI agents in different payment ecosystems, while each network still retains its independent approval and risk management processes. The core of this collaboration is building a system: once an AI agent has completed authentication at a payment provider, there is no need to repeat the process on other platforms.
According to Jiang Ming, chief innovation officer of Ant International, in practice, if an AI agent is already registered with Ant, there is no need to register again with Visa or Mastercard. Previously, these three institutions have launched their own protocols: Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, Mastercard's Verifiable Intent, and Ant International's Agent Mobile Protocol. Now, all parties will explore opportunities and work to develop common principles.
At present, merchants and platforms are facing the cost pressure of repeated integration due to the different representations of identity and authorization methods in each network. Pablo Fourez, chief digital officer at Mastercard, pointed out that "interoperability across the Know Your Agent framework is critical to enabling large-scale agent commerce," emphasizing that merchants and payment processors need a consistent way to identify AI agents they can trust.
Three companies provided ambitious market forecasts to support the initiative. According to McKinsey, AI agents are expected to dominate US$3 trillion to US$5 trillion in global consumer transactions by 2030. This data was jointly quoted by three parties.
Although there is strong institutional support behind this announcement, the framework is still in its early stages. No technical specifications, governance bodies or implementation timetables have been disclosed. The announcement describes a framework under development rather than a technical standard already deployed across three payment networks.
Consumer trust remains a huge obstacle. According to the AI Business Trust Report released by Product.ai in April 2026, only 14% of consumers trust AI to make purchases without verification. This gap highlights the importance of building a credible, cross-network identity layer, but also means that as the initiative progresses, the lack of specific implementation details will be closely watched.
