Bitwise announced the closure and liquidation of the Bitwise Dogecoin ETF
On September 10, Bitwise Investment Advisers announced that it would close and liquidate the Bitwise Dogecoin ETF (code: BWOW) traded on the NYSE Arca Exchange. According to the official liquidation announcement, the fund's last trading day is expected to be October 14. Trading will stop before the opening on October 15, and the creation of new shares will also end.
Bitwise said it closed BWOW to "optimize its product portfolio to meet changing investor needs." The company did not specifically identify weak demand, operating costs or fund performance as specific reasons. However, the fund's assets and trading history suggest it has struggled to expand.
BWOW will be launched in late November 2025, and its expected last trading day is less than 11 months before its establishment.
BWOW only accounts for 6% of the assets of the three funds.
As of September 10, according to SoValue data, BWOW's net assets are approximately US$687,730, and the cumulative net cash flow is negative US$1.23 million.
The following comparison covers only three products in the SoSoValue Dogecoin ETF dashboard: GDOG, TDOG and BWOW. It does not represent all U.S. -marketed products that provide DOGE exposure, including REX-Osprey's DOJE.

Data as of September 10, 2026 (Source: SoSoValue)
The total assets of these three funds are approximately US$11.83 million. BWOW accounts for approximately 6% of this, while GDOG accounts for approximately 73%.
On September 10, only shares worth US$5,920 were traded in BWOW, equivalent to 429 shares, or less than 1% of the fund's net assets. Low activity can result in investors facing fewer counterparties and make execution close to net asset value unreliable.
Lower rates are not enough to build scale
BWOW charges an annual management fee of 0.34%, which is lower than the 0.35% for GDOG and 0.50% for TDOG. Still, its asset size and daily trading volume are the lowest of the three products.
The difference in rates between BWOW and GDOG is only 1 basis point, which means saving $1 per year for a $10,000 investment. This small savings will hardly compensate BWOW for its smaller asset base and thinner trading activity.
When the difference in rates is so small, investors may pay more attention to fund size and trading volume. These factors will affect the convenience of buying and selling shares, while the annual cost advantage slowly accumulates.
Our August analysis also found that regulated dogcoin products remain small relative to DOGE's broader market value. The closure of BWOW provides a concrete example of how much pressure limited demand can put on one of these products.
BWOW has lost 59% of its assets
According to second-quarter filings with the SEC, BWOW's net assets fell approximately 59% in the first half of 2026, from US$1.15 million at the end of December to US$473,547 at June 30.
During this period, the reported reference price of Dogecoin fell from approximately US$0.1165 to US$0.0722. Investors also redeemed 20,000 shares worth $406,971, reducing the total number of outstanding shares from 60,000 to 40,000 shares. During that six-month period, no new shares were created.
As a result, BWOW lost assets through both DOGE price declines and shareholder redemptions. Although its assets later recovered to approximately $687,730 on September 10, cumulative net cash flow remained negative.
What will investors holding BWOW face?
Once Bitwise begins to liquidate BWOW's portfolio, the fund will no longer be managed in accordance with its normal investment goals. Therefore, its performance may be out of line with the price of Dogecoin during the period of open position sales and preparation for cash distribution.
Shareholders can choose to sell before the close of the transaction, or wait for automatic redemption:
- Sell before October 14: Investors can dispose of their shares through the secondary market. The strike price may differ from the fund's net asset value.
- Reserved until liquidation: No action is required. Bitwise expects to calculate the value of the remaining shares on October 21 and distribute the proceeds in cash on October 22.
Retained investors will receive cash in their brokerage accounts instead of dogcoin.
The fund's Form 8-K warns that cash distributions may create taxable events. The consequences depend on the investor's personal circumstances, account type and tax jurisdiction.
What the closure of BWOW means for Dogecoin funds
Closing BWOW will not affect Dogecoin network and will not eliminate regulated DOGE exposure in U.S. brokerage accounts. Other marketed products are still available.
The liquidation shows that obtaining regulatory approval does not guarantee that there will be sufficient demand for every single-asset cryptocurrency fund. For investors in smaller products, fund size, daily trading volume, potential trading spreads and redemption procedures may be more important than a 1 basis point difference in rates.
BWOW's experience leads to a narrower conclusion than Bitwise's announcement itself: When funds are unable to attract large amounts of assets or sustained trading activity, the lowest rates provide little advantage.
