FollowingBritish cryptocurrency tycoon Ben Delo donated record sum to the Reform Party
According to Reuters and other media reports, British cryptocurrency billionaire Ben Delo donated £ 36 million (approximately US$49 million) to the Reform Party led by Nigel Farage, the largest single political donation to a British political party to date.
As one of the co-founders of cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX, Dellow said he made the donation to ensure "fair competition" in the election.
Farage responded by saying: "I feel honored and humbled that Ben Dellow has shown such great confidence in the Reform Party... Ben knew that we were the only party that could turn the situation around in the country and reverse the decline of Britain."
Previously, Dellow was already the Reform Party's second largest donor, behind billionaire Christopher Harborne. Harborne had donated £ 9 million to the party in August last year.
Cryptocurrency donations spark regulatory controversy
Last month, reports stated that Farage was under investigation for receiving millions of dollars in donations and gifts from two people associated with the cryptocurrency industry, Harborne and George Cottrell.
This series of contributions related to the cryptocurrency industry has raised concerns among many lawmakers, who have questioned the impact of digital assets on British politics. According to reports, Labour MPs are considering making permanent the moratorium on accepting cryptocurrency donations announced in March this year in response to what Farage called "gifts" from Harborne and Cottrell until relevant legislation is introduced.
The Daily Telegraph pointed out that the £ 36 million donation is equivalent to £ 1 million a month until a general election is held in 2029. But Dellow chose to pay the entire amount in one lump sum to prevent it from being intercepted or banned.
Background: BitMEX founder's legal dilemma and pardon
It is worth noting that Delo was one of the three co-founders of BitMEX and pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal court to related charges of violating the Bank Secrecy Act. Although he agreed to pay a $10 million fine in 2022, he did not serve his sentence in prison. In March 2025, he and colleagues Arthur Hayes and Samuel Reed received a pardon from U.S. President Donald Trump.
In addition, the by-election triggered by Dellow's resignation as a member of the House of Commons was also controversial. He resigned in July and later regained his seat in the by-election by defeating satirical candidate Count Binface with 63%.
