Verizon joins forces with major technology partners to expand 6G Forum
Verizon's stock has performed strongly as it expands its network of 6G industry partners. Nine technology companies have joined Verizon's forum to support future 6G research and development efforts. Verizon is testing sensing tools for crowd density, drone and vehicle tracking. The smart glasses pilot project demonstrates how edge networks support real-time sports data streaming. Los Angeles will serve as the main testing hub ahead of the broader commercial 6G launch.
Verizon shares rise as the company deepens 6G industry cooperation
Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ)Stocks rose 1.29% to close at $51.26, or $0.65, in Monday's trading session. The rally follows Verizon's announcement that it would expand its 6G Innovation Forum to nine new technology companies. The initiative aims to develop future wireless systems for edge computing, smart glasses, sensing technology and advanced connected devices.
Verizon expands 6G forum with major technology partners
Verizon has added Amazon Web Services, Cisco, Intel, Keysight Technologies, MediaTek, NVIDIA, Palo Alto Networks, Rohde & Schwarz, and VIAVI Solutions as partners. These companies join the founding members of Ericsson, Samsung, Nokia, Meta and Qualcomm Technologies in participating in Verizon's wireless development program. The group plans to jointly develop an open 6G ecosystem and test new technologies and network needs.
The forum focuses on new spectrum bands, network capacity, edge computing, security, device development and advanced wireless applications. Members will also strive to remain compatible with international standards developed by international standards organizations, including 3GPP. Verizon expects broader industry participation to support the accumulation of more experience in actual testing to prepare for future customer-facing commercial 6G networks.
Verizon is positioning advanced connectivity to address the growing demand for connected devices that generate large amounts of real-time data. Smart glasses may require stronger uplink capacity because users will continue to send video, audio and environmental information. As a result, future networks may require a different traffic design than traditional mobile systems that focus mainly on downloading.
Verizon tests network awareness technology for crowds, drones and vehicles
Verizon also highlighted its recent integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) pilot project with Samsung and Qualcomm, which is based on current 5G Advanced technology. ISAC allows wireless infrastructure to detect movement and environmental changes while continuing normal mobile communication services. The technology may ultimately support public safety, event operations, traffic monitoring and autonomous systems.
Verizon and Samsung tested crowd density detection during an international football celebration in Dallas, Texas. The demonstration used a 5G base station, CBRS spectrum, Samsung smartphones and edge processing equipment. The system analyzes changes in wireless signals and generates real-time crowd density information without relying on traditional camera systems.
Verizon and Qualcomm tested drone and vehicle tracking capabilities at Qualcomm's San Diego campus. The system uses millimeter-wave spectrum and synchronous transmission points to monitor air and ground targets. It tracks movement while maintaining high-speed 5G Standalone services, demonstrating how future networks can support multiple functions simultaneously.
Smart glasses pilot builds Verizon 6G deployment strategy
Verizon also demonstrated an AI Sports Companion application designed around edge computing and wearables. The prototype allows users wearing Meta smart glasses to request statistics, scores and game probability information via voice commands. Verizon processes these requests through its Edge network to reduce latency and improve real-time response times.
The project reflects Verizon's broad focus on applications that require stronger uplink performance and lower network latency. Wearables may continue to transmit information while receiving processed responses from nearby computing infrastructure. As a result, Verizon is testing network designs to balance data uploads and downloads more efficiently than existing mobile architectures.
Verizon plans to conduct more demonstrations involving robots, digital twins, sensing systems, advanced wearables and edge-based applications. The company views the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics as an important testing environment before commercial 6G deployments. Verizon already operates a dedicated 6G laboratory in Los Angeles to support development and large-scale network trials.
