BTC Bitcoin miners test "non-silicon-based" innovation: Simulate insect brains to participate in mining
A Bitcoin hardware manufacturer is testing an extraordinary technology: it no longer relies on traditional silicon chips, but instead runs simulated insect brains. FutureBit, which builds the HashFly and Apollo III ASIC mining machines, has developed a browser demonstration project called HashFly that converts the brain of fruit flies into "mining hardware."
The system ran on 2,914 neural traces extracted from a complete map of the brain and nervous system of male fruit flies, containing a total of 165,122 reconstructed neurons. In the demonstration, a simulated photoreceptor "reads" the Bitcoin block header, and when the SHA-256d hash value falls below a toy target (i.e., a simplified version of Bitcoin's true mining difficulty), two neurons called PPL101 cells flash.
Theoretical Energy Efficiency Comparison
FutureBit posted a post on the X Platform (formerly Twitter) saying: "If this system can be scaled on real organic neurons, its hash efficiency is about 1 watt per terahertz... 10 times more energy efficiency." The company compared this theoretical configuration with the best 3-nanometer silicon-based ASIC mining machine on the market.
How the Drosophila brain miner works
