Gold and silver suffered heavy losses, falling to their lowest level in seven weeks.
Today, gold and silver prices fell sharply, with both precious metals falling to their lowest level in about seven weeks. Investors are reacting to another surge in oil prices, high bond yields and widespread expectations that interest rates may remain high for longer.
Spot gold fell about 3% during Monday's trading session, falling below the US$4,200 per ounce mark, hitting its lowest level since August 5. Silver was even more severely hit, falling more than 4% at one point to the $61 -62 range.
This trend erased huge market value in just a few hours and continued the weakness that began to appear last week. Previously, the upward momentum of these two metals has weakened.
High oil prices resurrect inflation concerns
Oil prices were the core factor in the sell-off. Crude oil prices rose as negotiations involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz failed to reach a clear solution. Iran's insistence on meeting conditions for reopening the waterway has continued to fuel concerns about tight global energy supplies.
This poses a challenge for gold and silver, as expensive oil prices directly drive up inflation expectations. If energy costs remain high, the Fed will lack room to relax monetary policy. As a result, the market is more calm about the possibility of interest rates remaining high or even raising interest rates again because inflation is difficult to control.
That sentiment quickly spread to the bond market. U.S. Treasury yields remain at multi-year highs, with the 10-year Treasury yield recently exceeding 5%. Higher yields make interest-free assets such as gold and silver less attractive because investors can earn higher returns by holding government debt. Currently, this relationship is creating a negative situation for both metals.
A stronger dollar puts additional pressure
The U.S. dollar index stabilized above 101 on Monday as investors continued to price the Fed's tighter policy path. Typically, a stronger dollar puts a headwind on dollar-denominated commodities because it makes buyers of other currencies more costly.
As a result, gold is suffering multiple blows at the same time: oil prices maintain inflation fears, bond yields remain high, Federal Reserve policies are still seen as restrictive, and the dollar continues to attract demand for funds.
Silver faces the same forces, but due to its smaller market size and greater volatility, its price movements tend to be more violent. This explains why silver fell faster than gold during this decline.
Expectations to raise interest rates hurt prospects for precious metals
The Federal Reserve remains a key link in the situation. Gold and silver were already under pressure earlier this month as the Federal Reserve took a stronger stance. Currently, the market is closely watching the possibility that policymakers may raise interest rates again while controlling inflation.
