Musk followed Trump and renamed "artificial intelligence" to "super intelligence"

Elon Musk quickly joined the ranks after President Donald Trump ordered the abandonment of the term "artificial intelligence", which has become a mainstream term since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022. On Sunday, Musk expressed his support for the move on the X platform, posting: "No more use of AI (artificial intelligence). Switch to SI (Super Intelligence). This is better."

When asked if SpaceX's xAI company would replace the word "AI" in its name with "super intelligence", Musk replied: "Yes, we will make this change.", meaning changing the name of his company to "SpaceX SI." In another X update released on the same day, the billionaire wrote: "SpaceX is a super-intelligent company."

Musk is ready for Trump's era of "superintelligence"

Although Musk has publicly supported the rebranding of "superintelligence," President Trump's order for federal agencies to rename "artificial intelligence" to "superintelligence" will still take some time to adapt. Previously, when speaking at the White House summit on September 29, xAI founder Musk accidentally used the word "AI" and immediately corrected it. After correcting his slip of the tongue, he also received a response from Trump tapping his elbow.

Compared with other major technology executives attending the summit, Musk was more firm in supporting "SI" and even joked about changing the company's name. These executives include representatives from Google, Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, xAi and Nvidia, all of whom signed the Super Intelligence Agreement at the White House summit.

Trump signed Executive Order 14434 on September 29, directing executive branches and agencies to replace "artificial intelligence" and "AI" with "super intelligence" and "SI" in official functions, including public communications, websites, reports and other non-statutory documents. Where permitted by law, the order also directs the cessation of recognition of old terms. However, the order does not revoke existing regulations, contracts or past presidential executive actions.

The next step on the name change is expected to occur within 60 days after the order is signed. By then, Trump is expected to receive the text of proposed legislation defining "superintelligence" from the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Science and Technology.

Why Trump wants to change the name of AI

Artificial intelligence and the data centers it supports carry a negative reputation. From AI agents invading third-party websites (including government domain names) to widespread community resistance to data centers, these issues emerge one after another. Politicians and industry insiders in Washington believe that abandoning names with negative baggage is a crisis public relations tool. In addition, Trump also tends to abandon what he considers "false words" and use the word "super" instead.

Nvidia CEO Huang Renxun has adopted the term "super intelligence" and now calls the data center a "super smart factory."

Governor Newsom, Public Question and Controversy Words

Although the U.S. president likes the new name, it is not popular outside his small circle. A YouGov poll showed that 53% of respondents prefer to retain the name "artificial intelligence", while only 9% support the new term "super intelligence."

As of September 30, California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed his own executive order insisting on using the name "artificial intelligence." Newsom criticized the strategy, saying that the name change "cannot allow people with normal intelligence to ignore its lack of safety risks."

David Krueger, professor of artificial intelligence and founder of the nonprofit organization Evitable, called the move a "word game" that adds to confusion because "Superintelligence itself is an existing term with a different meaning than artificial intelligence."

This label has even caused divisions within the right-wing camp. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis attacked Huang Renxun on September 30, posting: "Super smart factory = monitoring center."

The president is keen on renaming things
