Cardano Foundation launches independent digital identity company Veridian
The Cardano Foundation has spun off its digital identity project Veridian to form an independent Swiss company. On October 8, 2026, at the TOKEN2049 conference in Singapore, the foundation confirmed that Veridian will operate as an independent commercial company. Before obtaining independent legal personality, Veridian had been developing within the Cardano Foundation for three years. Thomas A. Mayfield became CEO, having previously served as head of the foundation's decentralized trust and identity division.
The foundation has not completely withdrawn from the project. Frederik Gregaard, CEO of the Cardano Foundation, will serve as Chairman of Veridian's Board of Directors, and Nicolas Jacquemart, chief legal officer, will also serve on the Board. Switzerland-based Veridian will build identity verification tools for governments, businesses and AI agents.
Veridian develops digital credentials based on the open KERI and ACDC standards, allowing individuals, businesses, and AI agents to verify identity and permissions without the need for a central database. Under Mayfield's leadership, the project has released a mobile wallet that is compatible with iOS and Android and integrates with Utah's digital identity regulations.
First assets unveiled in Cardano's new CIP-0113 standard
Veridian's shares became the first asset issued based on Cardano's new CIP-0113 programmable token standard, which was officially launched on the main network the day before. "Veridian is the first company to tokenize its own shares on the new CIP-0113 standard we announced yesterday." Gregaard told the media. The company's total share capital is 1 million shares, most of which have been tokenized.
These tokenized shares are not issued to the public. In accordance with Swiss Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) regulations, Veridian's shares have been officially issued as ledger securities on the Cardano blockchain. The proposal defines programmable tokens as assets that must be executed through scripts to be successfully transferred before ownership changes.
CIP-0113 solves issues such as whitelists, blacklists, customer due diligence, and other compliance rules that may be required for tokenized securities, and implements these control mechanisms through existing Cardano-native functions rather than using a hard fork. In addition, the Cardano Foundation and the Swiss Capital Markets and Technology Association (CMTA) announced that CIP-0113 has been recognized as equivalent to a CMTAT smart contract in view of the requirements of the CMTA certification program.
Frederik Gregaard, CEO of the Cardano Foundation, which is also chairman of Veridian, said the company plans to seek strategic investors in 2027.
