North Korea uses third-country remote workers to infiltrate U.S. companies to fund weapons programs

NBC News reported on Friday that North Korea is using third-country remote workers, including Iran and Lebanon, to help it infiltrate U.S. companies and obtain funds to support its weapons development projects.

In July this year, the U.S. government issued an alert in conjunction with multiple foreign institutions, stating that North Korean IT practitioners "seek to sign contracts with the intention of remitting salaries back to their North Korean institutions." They pose an internal threat to the company and are involved in data theft, cryptocurrency theft, and sensitive information disclosure."

As the United States and other governments take steps to curb North Korea's actions, North Korea is increasingly turning to using IT personnel from third countries to go through the interview process. According to reports, these positions are usually taken over by North Korean agents after receiving work contracts.

NBC reported that these foreign IT staff are mainly recruited through the LinkedIn platform, and some are even provided with a monthly salary of US$500 in cryptocurrency to serve as "interview assistants" as part-time. Relevant cases show that Councilsys had inadvertently outsourced its development work to North Korea.

North Korea's increasingly complex tactics seem to have achieved some results. Cointelegraph quoted a report from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike in May this year as saying that hackers and threat actors associated with the North Korean state caused more than US$2 billion in cryptocurrency losses in 2025, a year-on-year increase of 51%.

The Bank of Korea estimates that North Korea's gross domestic product (GDP) will grow by 3.5% in 2025 despite global sanctions.
