Ethereum moves towards a "Cryptographic World Computer": Fundamental changes in 2030
The Ethereum blockchain is undergoing a profound transformation, evolving from a traditional blockchain architecture to a qualitatively different "Cryptographic World Computer". In an in-depth analysis that has sparked widespread debate in the cryptocurrency community recently, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin pointed out that although Ethereum still retains some core blockchain features, with advances in cryptography, consensus mechanisms and architecture technologies, by 2030, Ethereum will be fundamentally different from bitcoin-style systems and even earlier Ethereum.
From traditional blockchain to decentralized computing platform
Essentially, Ethereum is transforming from a traditional blockchain form to what Butrin calls a "cryptographic world computer." This is a system that deeply integrates on-chain security with advanced cryptographic technology, privacy protection, and decentralized off-chain computing capabilities.
According to Butrin, the network is gradually moving away from traditional blockchain design through a series of upgrades. These key upgrades include:
- SNARK-based authentication mechanism
- PeerDAS (Point-to-point data availability sampling)
- Optimized proof-of-stake (PoS) mechanism
- Multi-party block construction
- Parallel processing technology
- Enhanced privacy capabilities
Future roadmap: Quantum defense and formal verification
Butrin said the Hegota upgrade expected to be launched next year could mark the last "normal" hard fork in line with traditional wisdom, and it will still look familiar to those familiar with 2015 Ethereum. However, future changes will focus on recursive STARKs (Extensible Arguments), automated formal verification, and defenses against quantum computing threats.
Butrin's ultimate vision is to create a platform that combines cryptographic proof, stronger privacy protection capabilities, and the ability to perform off-chain computing in a decentralized manner while maintaining blockchain-level security.
Industry resonance: DeFi's trust minimization new opportunities
As Buterin said: "The end result of this process will be: We will have a secure computing environment that is cheaper, more scalable and has high privacy than we can achieve with old-era technologies alone-this is the 'Cryptographic World Computer'."
Since the publication of this article, Butrin's views have received strong support from many leaders in the cryptocurrency field. Among them, AAVE founder and CEO Stani Kulechov spoke highly of this:
"There are countless application scenarios, and Ethereum's verifiability will play a huge role outside the smart contract execution environment in the financial sector, which will expand our practical capabilities in decentralized finance (DeFi) while minimizing trust risks. I am extremely excited about this potential."
