Chainlink releases CCIP 2.0: Enhancing Cross-Chain Interoperability and Compliance

On September 28, Chainlink released an updated version of its Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP)-CCIP 2.0. This update allows token issuers to add custom verification steps, adjust the number of confirmations required for transfers, and apply compliance checks to transfers. The core function of CCIP is to move tokens and data between different blockchains, a function called "interoperability."

Chainlink said that CCIP 2.0 is now officially launched and is open to institutions and digital asset issuers. The company pointed out that this release adds configurable security, compliance and settlement speed options.

Chainlink pointed out in an article published on April 22 that the Cross-Chain Bridge hack resulted in the theft of nearly $3 billion. At the same time, the company also mentioned that some cross-chain bridges sacrifice security through centralized node deployment and dependencies. CCIP 2.0 retains Chainlink's default validator network and allows publishers to add their own validators on top of it.

Verification mechanism under CCIP 2.0

By default, CCIP transfers are approved by Chainlink committee validators. The verifier consists of 16 independent node operators and must reach a consensus to execute the transaction. According to Chainlink, in version 2.0, publishers can add a cross-chain validator (CCV) run by themselves or operated by a third party. Chainlink said each verifier must sign a transaction before it is executed.
