Ethereum may make conversion between L1 and L2 easier

The Ethereum main network completes the first atomized cross-layer transaction from L1 to L2 under the EEZ framework

The Ethereum main network successfully handled the first atomized transaction under the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) framework, realizing the connection between the main network and the Layer-2 network. The test transaction carries 0.001 ETH and coordinates state changes between the two execution layers.

Technology Breakthrough: Synchronous composability becomes a reality

EEZ allows connected Rollup (rolling layers) to invoke Ethereum contracts in a single transaction without relying on a separate bridging infrastructure. This "atomic execution" mechanism means that the associated L1 and L2 operations are either completed at the same time or rolled back at the same time, completely solving the risk that one side succeeds and the other side fails in previous multi-step transactions.

EEZ contributor Eduardo Antuña Díez said on October 5 that the transaction marks the first time that the EEZ framework has achieved atomic L1 to L2 execution on the Ethereum main network. Subsequent review of the transaction log showed that this was a cross-chain call, accompanied by a transfer of 0.001 ETH and an update of Rollup status.

"Atomic synchronous composability is no longer just a promise." Antuña wrote on social media,"The history of the main network has been rewritten: the first atomized cross-chain L1->L2 transaction in history has been born and this is just the beginning of EEZ..."

Solving the problem of liquidity fragmentation

Currently, Ethereum's Rollup usually runs as a stand-alone execution environment. When users move assets across networks or interact with applications, they often need to rely on bridged transactions, independent liquidity pools, and asynchronous messaging, resulting in fragmented experiences and inefficiencies.

EEZ is designed to change this by coordinating operations around Ethereum's own block production. ETH remains the settlement asset and the only source of fact, while connected Rollup is designed to directly leverage Ethereum's contracts and liquidity, allowing users to operate without first completing a separate bridging step.

Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst and Zisk founder Jordi Baylina jointly launched the Ethereum Economic Zone project in March after receiving funding from the Ethereum Foundation. Gnosis and Zisk, as founding contributors, are committed to reducing liquidity fragmentation among Rollups. Currently, the EEZ Association is being established in Switzerland to develop the framework as an open source infrastructure.

Technical details and limitations

Although this mainnet test has progressed, only 0.001 ETH was used and should therefore be regarded as a technical demonstration rather than evidence that the system is ready to support large-scale financial activity.

EEZ's core protocol coordinates L1 transactions with special L2 blocks and submits associated operations to the Ethereum block. If required conditions are not met, coordinated execution can be rolled back. Official materials point out that the architecture allows applications to access contracts and liquidity in participating environments without maintaining independent deployments and bridging integrations.

However, the project is still in its early stages. Its public core protocol repository marks the software as an "early implementation" and says it has not been audited and that interfaces and storage layout may still change. The system adopts off-chain state calculation followed by on-chain verification to realize atomic calls within a single L1 block.

August development updates show that the architecture is still evolving rapidly. Developers recently identified design issues regarding block root commitments, gas restrictions and upgrade paths, fixed serious activity issues, and tested Rollup 0 on the Chiado testnet and internal development net. In addition, cross-Rollup calls in some execution stages require that the Rollups involved must be verified together in the same batch, and the behavior of some proxy operations also depends on the chain in which they are executed.

Gnosis Chain is expected to become the first major EEZ Rollup

Gnosis DAO approved Proposal GIP-153 in August, supporting the transformation of Gnosis Chain from a stand-alone L1 to an EEZ Rollup settled on Ethereum. The proposal was adopted with 123,158 GNO votes in favor, 115 votes against and 151 abstentions.

The goal of the governance proposal is to achieve the creation block set by the new Gnosis EEZ between December 2026 and January 2027. Users will retain their existing addresses, balances and application status, and Ethereum will eventually replace Gnosis Chain's independent validator system as a billing layer.
