Robinhood Wallet supports credit card purchases of memin
Robinhood Wallet and Trading App Fomo now allows users to purchase memin directly using their credit card through Apple Pay or Google Pay. Such purchase processes do not require the regular KYC authentication required by most cryptocurrency applications. Test transactions are classified in the system as digital media consumption rather than cryptocurrency transactions, so users can earn points and cash back normally. As reported on September 1, Chase and Visa are reviewing the setting.
Robinhood Wallet and Fomo skip ID verification for memin purchases
Robinhood Wallet and Fomo added this option this month. Users can purchase memin directly through their mobile phones using credit cards, and the payment process is completed through Apple Pay or Google Pay. Neither app requires users to fill out regular authentication forms. Cryptocurrency infrastructure company Crossmint provided technical support for the payment. Crossmint's head of strategy said the product removes obstacles to the payment process. Tokens currently available for purchase include dogwifhat (WIF) and dozens of small tokens. Fomo raised $75 million in a Series B financing earlier this year. Crossmint says more than 68,000 first-time buyers have used its payment tools.
How Crossmint payments circumvent standard cryptocurrency codes
Visa and Mastercard have separate rules for cryptocurrency purchases. Direct purchases of cryptocurrency require the use of special codes and logos. Such transactions receive the code MCC 5815. The code covers digital goods such as e-books and movies rather than cryptocurrencies. Therefore, these transactions will not trigger cryptocurrency-related restrictions and can be processed as regular transactions. This allows users to still earn reward points when purchasing memin using a credit card. In contrast, Coinbase still requires users to authenticate when purchasing cryptocurrency through a credit card, and its transaction path uses a different code than cash-based transactions. Crossmint also allows the use of certain closed-loop tokens tied to specific applications or games.
Chase filed a complaint with Visa
The bank stated that points should not be earned for cryptocurrency purchases. Chase has filed a complaint with Visa over the issue, pointing out that the transaction lacks the special cryptocurrency token required by Visa. Crossmint stood by its choice and cited SEC guidance saying that some memocoins are digital collectibles, not securities. The following is a comparison of the two encoding paths:
Category: Standard purchase
Code: MCC6051 or 6012
Can you be rewarded: No
Category: Crossmint token purchase
Code: MCC5815
Can you be rewarded: Users who use
to purchase memin using their credit cards in this way will still show regular consumption on the bill. The New York State Attorney General's Office said it was reviewing the matter. Visa confirmed that it had no comment on the specific coding decision.
Expert Opinion
Legal experts believe there are differences between SEC rules and Visa or Mastercard rules. Yesha Yadav, a law professor at Vanderbilt University, said that the two systems operate independently and that the SEC's comments on memin do not determine the coding rules of payment networks. Payment lawyer Ashley Ebersole believes that at the regulatory level, the two categories may not be substantially different, and both belong to non-securities crypto assets. Payments researcher Doug Kantor pointed out that codes are rarely reviewed once set, and Visa may reallocate codes or impose fines on merchants. This difference may explain why users can now use credit cards so easily to purchase memin.
Glossary
MCC (Merchant Category Code): A code that tells the type of business to which a payment network transaction belongs. KYC (Know Your Customer): Authentication performed by a business before allowing a transaction or payment. Digital collectibles: A blockchain token whose value stems mainly from scarcity or community status, rather than functionality. Apple Pay / Google Pay: A mobile wallet tool that allows mobile phones to complete payments instantly. Token Checkout: A tool provided by Crossmint that allows users to purchase memin using a credit card without KYC.
Conclusion
Robinhood Wallet and Fomo demonstrate the rapid evolution of the cryptocurrency payment process. Being able to purchase memin using a credit card lowers the entry threshold for new users. The coding controversy with Chase and Visa could reshape the way such transactions work in the future.
