The road to recovery
To protect privacy, this individual is referred to only as "Chris". He made his first Bitcoin purchase in December 2011 using Britcoin, a British cryptocurrency platform, which was subsequently renamed Intersango. As the exchange ceased operations at the end of 2012 and disappeared completely in early 2014, Chris found himself unable to retrieve his digital assets.
At the time of purchase, he invested approximately £ 1,500, equivalent to approximately US$2,000. During this period, Bitcoin traded at less than $4 per coin.
Over the next few years, Chris witnessed the staggering price rise of Bitcoin while firmly convinced that his investment had been lost forever. "The most painful part was watching the value of Bitcoin soar and realizing what this money could have meant to my family," he explained. At the moment he lost access, his position had increased to approximately $5,400. He described the experience as a financial setback. "We had young children and had just bought a house, which was the money we urgently needed," he recalled.
CEL Law Firm partnered with its affiliated institution The Crypto Tracing Experts to deploy specialized blockchain analysis software to track missing assets. The company discovered a digital wallet containing funds allegedly belonging to former Intersango customers and holding more than 5,500 bitcoins-currently worth about $421 million.
Chris successfully recovered this asset. With Bitcoin currently trading at nearly $76,500, the total amount of money he recovered was approximately $4.5 million.
Ryan Sweetnam, CEL's head of financial litigation, explained that a successful recovery requires comprehensive documentation covering nearly 15 years, including bank statements that verify the original transaction.
The recycling process proved very complex. Claimants need to provide conclusive evidence to prove their ownership. According to CEL law firm, other former Intersango customers are also eligible to recover assets if they can provide evidence of their ownership of bitcoins on the platform.
Chris said he plans to use part of the recovered funds to help his son repay mortgage debts and settle his outstanding obligations. He mentioned his intention to retain some of his Bitcoin holdings, while expressing concerns about market volatility and regulatory uncertainty in the cryptocurrency industry. "Part of me wants to keep some bitcoin in case it appreciates further, but it also makes me anxious about potential losses," he admitted.
This recovery shows that cryptocurrency assets lost through failed early exchanges may still be recovered through advanced tracking technology and appropriate legal representation.
