Bitcoin vs. Ripple versus Solana and other spot ETF candidates
Bitcoin's ETF dominance stems from its structural advantages: the product category has been around for a long enough time to have a complete track record of inflows, redemptions and arbitrage. After an inflow of $89.8 million the previous week, the Bitcoin ETF again recorded a net inflow of $118.8 million. This pattern of continuous positive inflows is regarded by institutional allocators as a liquidity signal and used to determine position sizes.
Ripple's advantage over Solana in the ETF queue is mainly due to legal aspects rather than market capitalization. Given that Ripple's core securities law issues have basically been settled, the compliance path faced by issuers is clearer. Instead, Solana's application is still under review, in part because the SEC has not issued guidance on whether SOL itself is a commodity or a security. This distinction directly determines whether ETF packaging is allowed.
In addition, Solana's position in the broader decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem has also weakened. According to CoinGecko, Solana's liquidity has contracted by 28.5% since 2025. This indicator complicates the case for spot ETFs because it raises questions about whether the underlying market is deep enough to support regulated products without creating huge price shocks.
Other spot ETF candidates, such as Litecoin and AVAX, face similar structural shortcomings. Because they lack both the market depth of Bitcoin and the clear regulatory clarity that Ripple does, they are of low priority in the eyes of issuers who manage limited compliance resources. The SEC's approval of the triple leverage Bitcoin and Ethereum ETP signals that regulators are willing to gradually expand the product range, but only if the underlying spot market for the asset is quite mature.
The potential impact of ETF dominance on crypto investors
For portfolio focused investors, the current ETF hierarchy creates liquidity asymmetry. Bitcoin and, increasingly, Ripple provide regulated entrances, with daily flow data and tight bid-ask spreads. Solana and other pending assets can only be accessed through direct custody or futures based products, which have different risk characteristics and tax treatments.
The actual effect is that institutional capital seeking spot exposure first defaults to Bitcoin, while Ripple is gradually positioning itself as a secondary asset rather than a substitute. Glassnode's data on the reversal of Bitcoin buying during the U.S. trading session shows that domestic institutional activity is intensifying, further consolidating Bitcoin's top position in the ETF hierarchy. Whenever Solana is approved, its approval timetable may narrow the gap, but for now it seems that this two-tier structure will remain solid.
