Cryptocurrency credit cards: The true cost behind a card
The promise of a cryptocurrency credit card is actually simple: when you pay at a store, deduct the corresponding amount from your cryptocurrency position. The difference between different products is rarely the card itself, but in four numbers: cash back rate, cash back limit, ATM fees and foreign exchange surcharges.
The survey method is summarized in one sentence: We searched the card pages and terms pages published by nine service providers promoted in Germany, and only intercepted the data clearly listed therein. Content that is not disclosed by the service provider is displayed here as "not explained" rather than "zero".
Comparison of nine service provider pages: Three documented card models
Review objects: Nine service provider pages. Card information for Bitpanda, Crypto.com and Nexo can be fully evaluated. Plutus's page displays reward rates, but does not provide tariff standards. Wirex, Bybit, Revolut, Coinbase and Bitvavo could not be evaluated, partly because the card page was missing under the expected path, and partly because the server refused automatic retrieval.
This is embarrassing for any comparison that claims to provide a complete checklist: a considerable number of terms are not disclosed on the product page. Which service providers issue cards in Germany can see our comparison of cryptocurrency credit cards.
Bitpanda Card: 1% cash back, but limited to cryptocurrency positions only
Bitpanda said the first card is free and a fee of 9.90 euros is required to replace a lost or stolen card. According to him, there is no fixed monthly fee. For payments outside the euro zone, the card page displays a foreign currency handling fee of 0%, adding that additional charges may be incurred by the card network.
The cashback is 1% of each purchase paid using the crypto asset. The restrictions behind them are even more critical: payments made using euro balances, stock and metal positions, stablecoins and crypto indices are not covered by cash rebates.
Bitpanda did not specify ATM withdrawal fees, but noted that local banks may charge additional fees. The card is limited to the euro area and, according to the service provider, does not currently support a second legal tender.
Crypto.com Visa: Five card levels, CRO pledge and monthly cashback caps
Crypto.com divides its products into five levels. Midnight Blue is free, no pledge is required, and a 0% cash back. Ruby Steel needs to pledge 450 euros, or pay a monthly fee of 3.99 euros, or an annual fee of 39.90 euros. Royal Indigo requires a pledge of € 4,500, or a monthly fee of € 24.99, or an annual fee of € 249.90. Rose Gold requires a pledge of € 45,000 and Obsidian requires a pledge of € 450,000.
The cashback rate increases with level: 2% for Ruby Steel, 3% for Royal Indigo, 4% for Rose Gold, and 5% for Obsidian, paid in platform token CRO. The key is the cap underneath it: Ruby Steel has a monthly reward cap of $25, Royal Indigo has a $75, and the two top levels claim to have no caps.
Practical significance of the upper limit
Based on a 2% cashback rate, the $25 cap corresponds to approximately $1,250 in monthly consumption; arithmetically, the excess no longer generates any benefits under this level. Pledging a CRO of 450 euros also means locking funds in tokens with fluctuating prices, which is an investment decision in itself.
Almost every card has a threshold: a monthly limit, and the reward will stop when it is reached.
In terms of ATMs, Crypto.com offers free monthly quotas: 200 euros for Midnight Blue, 400 euros for Ruby Steel, and 800 euros for three higher levels. In addition, there is a monthly withdrawal limit of 10,000 euros and a recharge limit of 25,000 euros. The page we retrieved did not state foreign currency handling fees or list countries. Travel rewards (up to 1.5% to 15% depending on the level) have been announced but are not yet effective.
Nexo Card: Credit lines rather than direct sales, foreign currency handling fees are graded by working days
Nexo distinguishes between two models. In the credit model, the loan is secured by the deposited position, and the payment is settled through the credit line; in the debit model, the position is directly spent. This will have tax implications.
The service provider did not specify the monthly fee, annual fee or idle fee, and the card issuance fee was not displayed on the page. Virtual cards require a minimum balance of $50 and are activated for free;Nexo said physical cards can be shipped for free when the balance reaches $5,000 and is at least a Gold Loyalty Plan.
ATM vs. Foreign Currency: Comparing Common Missing Fees
In terms of withdrawals, Nexo is the only one of the three service providers that states both the free limit and the excess fee. The free limit for basic level is up to 200 euros, silver level is 400 euros, gold level is 1,000 euros, and platinum level is 2,000 euros, each corresponding to the equivalent of British Pound. The service provider charges 2% for each additional withdrawal, with a minimum of € 1.99.
Foreign currency handling fees are more revealing because Nexo is the only one that charges fees according to weekdays. During the weekday, it is 0.2% in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, and 2% in the rest of the world. Over the weekend, the same rates increased to 0.7% and 2.5%; therefore, holiday payments made outside of Europe on Saturday cost more than payments made on Tuesday on the same day.
Bitpanda claims that the foreign currency handling fee is 0%, but does not specify the ATM fee;Crypto.com explains the ATM free limit, but remains silent on the currency handling fee. The actual cost of withdrawing money in Zurich cannot be fully known from any single product page.
Comparison of cashback rates: Why the percentage itself cannot explain the actual return
To put it in parallel, the reward situation is as follows: Bitpanda pays 1%, with no rating, no clear monthly cap, but only for cryptocurrency positions. Crypto.com pays 0% to 5%, with a cap on lower levels. Nexo pays 0.5% to 2% NEXO tokens based on loyalty level under credit model, or 0.1% to 0.5% in Bitcoin, both requiring a balance of US$5,000.
Three factors reduce the value of the nominal percentage and are present in the terms rather than in the advertising. The first is the payment currency: receiving rewards with platform tokens means taking on their price risk; Nexo's Bitcoin reward rate is much lower than token rewards at all levels. The second is the upper limit: after a certain monthly transaction volume exceeds, the arithmetic reward rate drops to zero. The third is pledged deposits: In the high-level level of Crypto.com, the pledged amount can reach five digits.
For a household spending 600 euros a month, the difference between 1% and 2% determines approximately 6 euros. A foreign currency withdrawal with a 2% surcharge may offset this advantage.
Nexo also pays interest on unspent balances
In debit model, Nexo claims that unspent balances receive interest of up to 13% per year, with credit line rates starting at 1.9%. Both numbers are peaks linked to loyalty levels; actual achievable interest rates are not stated on the card page.
Card levels are like switches: only the combination of deposit, cap and payment currency determines the actual return.
Plutus, Wirex and Bybit: The parts of this survey that cannot be verified
Plutus claims a cash back of 3% on all purchases, with a cash back of up to 9% at more than 70 million merchants, paid in the platform token PLUS, and a free virtual card and a 14-day trial period are also available. However, it did not specify the name and price of the tariff, the upper limit of transaction amount corresponding to each cash back rate, and ATM and currency handling fees. Therefore, it is impossible to recalculate the maximum cashback rate it promotes based on public information.
Wirex's expected card and fee paths returned a 404 error, Bybit's card page was redirected to the home page, and Revolut, Coinbase, and Bitvavo rejected our request with a 403 error. Therefore, these five service providers do not appear in any numerical statements in this article. In the browser, these pages can be accessed normally, and the blocking measures are for automatic access.
Tax issues with cryptocurrency credit cards: Each card payment constitutes a disposal
The most important cost factor does not appear on any service provider page. Anyone who uses a cryptocurrency credit card and converts Bitcoin or Ethereum into euros for payment constitutes a private disposal within the meaning of the tax law. The relevant clause is Article 23 of the German Income Tax Law: For other assets, if the period between purchase and disposal does not exceed one year, there is private disposal. The fifth sentence of paragraph 3 stipulates the tax exemption limit: if the total proceeds of private disposals during the calendar year are less than 1,000 euros, the proceeds are exempt from tax.
This makes every payment an event that needs to be recorded. A 3.20 euro cup of coffee paid for with a position purchased eight months ago will generate taxable gains or losses related to the difference in purchase value. Over the course of the year, this has accumulated into hundreds of individual incidents, each requiring a purchase date, purchase value, and disposal value. For relevant deductions, see our article on cryptocurrency credit cards and taxation.
This is where the real advantage of the credit model Nexo describes lies. If payments are settled through credit lines and positions are held only as collateral, they do not initially constitute disposal. When a taxable disposal occurs depends on repayment and realization, which falls within the scope of individual tax consultation. Both scenarios require an uninterrupted transaction record, and for this purpose we maintain an overview of cryptocurrency tax tools and portfolio trackers.
Card issuers and cryptocurrency service providers: Each card involves two companies
A cryptocurrency credit card is usually a debit or prepaid card issued by a payment service provider to which the cryptocurrency service provider attaches an account. This explains part of the wording in the terms: When Bitpanda claims that the foreign currency handling fee is 0%, while noting that the card network may incur surcharges, these are two charging levels, and the service provider can only control one of them. When selecting, in addition to the price, a second check needs to be carried out: Who is responsible for keeping the balance? Is the service provider registered in the public register? Since MiCA has been fully implemented in Europe, custodians and transaction services have required corresponding authorizations;BaFin and ESMA's registries are open to public access.
Methodological findings in this survey
Among the nine service provider pages reviewed, none listed all four core terms in the same place. Cash back rates can be seen everywhere, while foreign currency handling fees and ATM fees are moved to submenus or missing. This is not an accusation to any individual service provider, as the complete price list is usually located in the area after login. But this does explain why card comparisons often conflict with each other.
Choosing a cryptocurrency credit card: Summary of key points
Calculate the upper limit before selecting a level. Divide the monthly cap by the cashback rate to get the transaction amount at the time the reward stopped: taking US$25 and 2% as examples, which is approximately US$1,250 per month. If your card spending is much lower than this, a more expensive level will not benefit. Which service providers issue cards in Germany, please see Comparison of Cryptocurrency Credit Cards.
Foreign currency handling fees and ATM fees are evaluated separately from the cashback rate. A 2% surcharge on a foreign currency withdrawal may consume a full year's earnings from a 1% rebate rate. If these values are missing from the product page, ask your service provider for a price list. Users who bind cards to exchanges should also check their authorization, see Overview of Regulated Cryptocurrency Exchanges.
Clarify the documentation before the first payment is completed. Every card payment made with a cryptocurrency position is a taxable event. Set up the export and connect to the tax tool while the entry is short; our Overview of Cryptocurrency Tax Tools lists which tools can identify card transactions.
